Gave it a B. Very solid draft but nothing great. Other than Amobi and Jones, I don't see anything more than bench depth from our later picks. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I don't see any of our 2nd day guys making much of an impact on this team.
We did fill some needs rather than just going after the best player available. This draft is obviously not an A, especially with no 2nd or extra picks. However, i think this draft was good for us in a way others weren't. This draft leaves us set up to draft most our other needs next year. We've already dumped so much money in our D line it's insane because of how bad they are. I'm assuming Amobi will help Mario with the double team, in turn helping the rest of the overpaid line. We might finally get some pass rushing, even from Babin. So finally, we can take a #1 on the O-line next year, or a 2 and 3, RB going 1st. Then maybe fiddle with the secondary with the 4th. Who are usually slipped 3rd round guys. Seems like it could work out as a great 2 year draft plan if you can picture the big picture. They're might be hope for us after all. But i wouldn't expect much for 3 years since these guys need to develop unless we do some major free agent signings without being as stupid as teams like the Redskins who always have to give up all their picks for their over paid under performers. At least we realize it takes a QB to win.
Overall, its ok...Nothing spectacular...I really like Okoye as I think he'll develop nicely and damn, he'll be 20 when the season starts...
I gave it a B. Since Levi Brown went #5 , I wanted the rumored Denver swap to happen, so we could get Joe Staley and a 2nd round pick. However taking Amobi at 10 is awsome. We get a growing teenager with the smarts, abilities and hopefully durability to be a mainstay on the defensive line for 20 years. Our 2nd round pick is a fresh start at QB. That in itself is probably as good as any player we could of taken as far as reducing the negitive vibs around Relient Stadium. The rest of the draft will probably produce 1 starter and 3 solid backup/role players.
I don't agree that draft grades are worthless this early. Of course the effectiveness of the draft could run the gamut in every direction based upon how things play out, but none of that information is available to franchises at the time of the draft. I believe the only fair evaluation of a draft is to evaluate it based solely upon the information the franchises had available at the time they made their picks. Hindsight evalutions are also valuable, but for other reasons. IMO the Texans' draft last year was a B+ (if they take Bush or Young it's an A-). This year, it's B+.
i don't think they had the number of picks to get an A. i don't think they could have earned an A in that sense. i think they took the best player available with their top pick, and i'm excited about his impact on the defense.
"C" is widely considered "average", though I'm not one for "celebrating mediocrity". (Bonus points if you can name the movie.)
There wasn't enough talent available when the Texans picked to have an "Out-freaking-standing" draft. I think they did a good job considering the players available.
I was kidding, but I consider Schaub part of this draft since they used their second round pick to get him. I gave them an "A" because of that and the pick of Okoye... I feel like I should know this, but I can't think of anything.
(Just not a guy movie or sports movie at all.) I believe the full line is, "it's just another way of celebrating mediocrity!" or perhaps, "They're just finding more ways to celebrate mediocrity!"
I think they did okay with the picks they made, but really should have traded down from 10. Would have preferred Quinn + 2.8 + next year's 2nd over Schaub + Okoye, but it'd be foolish to plan around Quinn dropping to 1.8.
Mel Kiper gives us a C- Houston Texans: GRADE: C- The Texans took defensive tackle Travis Johnson in 2005, and he hasn't played up to his potential. They took DT Amobi Okoye when they should have been looking at a cornerback such as Leon Hall or Darrelle Revis. Also, they didn't do much to help new QB Matt Schaub on offense. Wide receiver Jacoby Jones played at Lane College, and tackle Brandon Frye and guard Kasey Studdard look more like backups than starters. This turned out to be a typical Houston draft. The Texans didn't help David Carr when he was their QB, and they didn't do much to help Schaub. Cornerback Fred Bennett was a good pick in the fourth round, and I really like linebacker Zach Diles. He had two productive years at Kansas State and might have flown under some teams' radar. Getting Diles in the seventh round was a good move.
I give it a C- I was thinking like you. I don't like reaching for players and I am big on taking the best available early and meeting needs late. Without a trade I really like Wade and Allison better (I was pretty big on Jason Hill) I would have traded down in a heartbeat if I could get Denver's 2nd and 3rd In that scenario- #1- Reggie Nelson FS #2-McCauley CB #3- Brandon McBane DT #3- Jason Hill WR #4- Andre Allison WR #4- Doug Free OT That is as far as I would go not knowing enough to draft 5-7 rounds I am good with Okoye and Bennett looks good. I'm pretty pleased actually. I think Jones, Harrison and Frye are very much developmental players, I would have looked for more starters. But if Okoye proves out this will definately and obviously become a A+ draft because domination in the line is what it is all about.
I hate most guy/sports movies, besides Rocky. My only guess is Rushmore, but I know that isn't right. What decade was it made?
