Forgot about KJ, one of the greatest moments in basketball history is when he dunked on the dream. Because the previous serious dream blocked his shot, next series KJ is rising and rising until he flushes over the big fella.

I agree with plutoblue's list and your corrections.

    And Magic could shoot.

And Nash... come on, for all his good points, he is a horrendous defender when compared to Magic, Stockton, Isiah, Kidd. His best defense is taking charges..

am i on clutchfans here? nash not making many top 5's, not even some top 10's. stockton and payton and kj and kidd getting credit for their storied careers? defense being factored in? it's like a bizarro-"nash discussion" on here. i like it.

Are you kidding me? These lists ALWAYS give too much credits to the players of history.

It's like everyone's afraid to even mention any modern day player with a past star.

With that said, I don't think Nash's overall career is as amazing as some of the other guys'. However his best years are among the top 5 at the least.

Nobody has mentioned Walt Frazier. What the ?

    The rank should be
    Magic
    Robertson
    Frazier
    Nash

I dont think it was the previous series. I think it was a previous game.

But the dunk came when the game was all but over, so not too great a moment, IMO.

I know Cousy won all those rings but there were only like 8 teams in the whole league back then and Cousy could only dribble with one hand and could only go to the right.

I think Nash is mostly underrated here. He is by far the best PG right now. He is arguably the most dominant offensive force in the game today.

Yes his defense is subpar. So was Charles Barkley's. But in their prime they are/were just dominant offensive players. That is far more important than a less offensively gifted player who is more well rounded.

Personally, while Stockton has them on longevity or sustained excellent, I don't think in their peaks he was more of a court presence than Isiah or Nash. I think Payton was better than Kidd, at least in skills, but his (GP's) personality may have hindered his team leadership relative to Kidd.

An important bottom line for Kidd is that in the end of the game you certainly don't have to double him. He just can't put pressure in crunch time on the defense like the others mentioned--you can play him to pass because his own shooting/scoring skills in the half court are so mediocre.

You can make an argument versus most, but that's just insane to take him over Magic Johnson.

How can someone be the best PG of all time when certainly didn't have a argument for being the best player at his time AND he probably was never the best PG during any of his playing years (surpassed by Magic and perhaps Isiah early, by the time those guys retired Payton and Kidd surpassed Stockton.

Stockton was a great on longevity, and a great PG overall, but at his best there were just more dominant players going around, not just in general but at his position..

Nash have to play a certain system to be at his peak, players like Magic and Kidd can play fast, slow, open court, half court, triangle..... and still play at their very best. Hence i rate nash lower than them.

It's very rare that you find a post in thread of this nature that you can totally agree with. Nice job.

To get a fair comparison let's take each guy's best 8 years in the league. That way we can throw out aberrations, rookie seasons and the very end when most guys are a shadow of themselves and get the numbers from the meat of a guy's career.

I'm lazy. Someone do it for me.

Jason Kidd is definitely a great passer, and I'd say he's better at it than Nash. I wouldn't say Nash is overrated as a passer, he makes passes nobody else can b/c of his court awareness and unusual moves (dribbling through the lane, around the basketball, disregard for the shot clock)

Can't forget Payton, who may be the best defensive point guard and maybe the 2nd most explosive scorer behind Zeke. He was also a winner and a great competitor. He just wasn't pass first like Magic/Stockton/Nash/Kidd.

I think the top 3 in the last decade have been Payton, Kidd, and Nash, in that order.Kidd and Payton are in a different league when it comes to defense and endured excellence.

Is this board full of 16 year-old's? How are people completely leaving off the likes of Tiny Archibald, Bob Cousy, Oscar Robertson, Pete Maravich?!?!?

I wasn't alive for those guys, but watch ESPN Classic, look up some stats, read some books, something.

Kenny Anderson, Mark Price, Tim Hardaway....WTF?

    Here's my list:

    1. Oscar Robertson
    2. Magic Johnson
    3. Tiny Archibald
    4. John Stockton
    5. Isiah Thomas
    6. Bob Cousy
    7. Jason Kidd
    8. Walt Frazier
    9. Gary Payton
    10. Pete Maravich
    11. Steve Nash
