The first time I felt the "old" bite I was on my motorcycle stopped at a red light. Two sweet looking girls in a ragtop pulled up next to me. We were making eye contact until the driver asked how old I was. I said 28. As the light changed they sped away shouting "tooooo old". Wow, that hurt. These days I'm reminded of my "oldness" by the muffler burns that just won't go away as quickly/likely as they use to.
I've actually been thinking about this lately and it's because of Buzzfest. I wouldn't consider myself being old as I am in my late 20's, but I went to the last buzzfest with Chris Cornell. Well on the side stage Earshot totally tore it up and people were going crazy in the pit. Tons of people were crowd surfing and a few people fell about 7-8 feet straight down on the concrete from crowd surfing. Anyway towards the end of the show some guy asked me if I wanted him to lift me up to crowd surf. The first thing I thought of was if I fall 8 feet like some of them other people will my insurance cover me so that my daughter eats. I kindly said no to the guy and then thought to myself damn I'm I getting to old to be here if the first thing I thought of was whether or not my insurance would cover me if I got injured from crowd surfing.
every year, i spend one weekend coaching a group of high school kids, basically teaching them about teamwork and leadership. saturday night is when they have their chance to relax for a couple of hours. well, the coordinator asked me to create a mixed cd for dancing...with a couple of caveats, no cuss words or strong sexual innuendos. i was like, um, ok. so without much thinking, i put a bunch of 80's music on there. let's just say that about 3 songs in, i was getting requests to play 97.9 the box on the fm dial.
80s might as well be the 50s to those kids, damn dude remember when we were High Schoolers, in my best old man voice
For the original poster I'm sorry to tell you things don't really improve. I'm in my late 30's and do martial arts and I know I've been getting old for the last 6 years because it takes me longer to heal from injuries while at the sametime younger guys that I used to kick ass on now routinely kick my ass. I rationalize it by saying that's good coaching on my part, since I've often found myself getting beat by a move I taught them, but the truth is that I'm just older, slower and my body more beat up than it used to be.
this thread is depressing and funny at the same time. i'll be 29 in march and feel old too. luckily i'm asian and ppl still think i'm 21 and i get carded way too much. i used to always go to the clubs where the lines were 3 blocks long and dance til 4 AM but now the thought of that scares me. i'd rather go to bed with my hubby and get 10 hours of sleep. first time i felt old was in college, i think 19, i came home and a bunch of us went to astroworld for the day and we were home by 6 PM. it was just so darn hot and way too many ghetto kids everywhere and the lines were so long and the price for a coke was so high. when i was little, i LOVED astroworld and would cry when i was too short to ride the rides. i always wanted to stay til midnight and watch the fireworks too. when i got home that night, i thanked my parents for taking me so much when i was little. it must be hard as a parent going when you have no interest in it but you do it for your kids. i told my parents i truly appreciated everything they did for us and i'd never go to an amusement park again until i had kids and i would do it all for them like they did for me. my parents just laughed at me and were happy to realize that i appreciated it.
The pain of skateboarding outweighed the thrill. The liver processed alcohol much more slowly. The music I listen to is "rare" and on the near-extinct vinyl media. Younger folks use "sir" when talking to me. My knees (left especially) know temperature and pressure better than the local weatherman. More employees "under" me than bosses "over" me. Invest more money in IRAs and the like than IOUs and bar tabs. Been with the same lovely lady for 17 years. I could go on and on, but I'm feeling pretty old right about now...
You know you are older when you say things like, "so darn hot". Seriously though, how did I play 5 soccer games in a weekend in the hot Houston summers. Now I don't even want to go outside from 10AM to 7PM in the summers and even then the humidity still kills at night.
Oh and by the way, I live in Dallas now and I swear it is worse here than in Houston. I guess it is because I didn't notice it as much as I did back in the day.
For me I start to feel old everytime I catch some flick on TV or DVD and recall when I first saw it in the theater.......20 YEARS AGO!!! That's when I feel like I'm getting up there in age.
There's a great family-owned pizza place called J Christopher's in Kingwood (which is where I grew up and my parents still live) that I've been going to since I was six years old (I'm 32 now). The place hires local teens as their hostesses and wait staff. So when I was picking up a pizza last weekend, it occurred to me that I've been going to that restaurant longer than most of the staff has been alive. That's feeling old.....
when you just feel like going home and having a quiet friday night at home. or when car trips start stope being exciting and start to become a pain in the butt, literally, and when your back starts to ache. when i was 16-20ish I could drive all damn day. Use to regularly make the 13 hour drive from tucson to my home town in west texas in one shot. Now, when i drive to dallas i start to 'feel' it. when you have a 3 day hangover like someone else said, you talk to a cute girl and she shutters when you tell them how old you are. when younger cashiers call you sir or mister. when you turn down a fun event because you have to run "errands" or do chores around the house.
