Question AB, do you know or have your performed with Steve Marshall or Jessica Kirson? Saw them last month at Dangerfield's; very funny.
AB, I think you are being way too sensitive. Now if he thought less of you because you were black, it would be a different story. Its kind of like my mom refering to Yao Ming as the Chinese basketball player.
If I met you I would say, "You're that guy who was on the piano last night at the club, right?" But if someone else asked me to describe you I'd say, "That tall black guy, in the pink suit. He was playing the piano last night." I don't see anything wrong with that, I'm just describing you as much as I can so the person I'm talking about can get a better visual.
Your moniker is Another Brother.....hmmm, I thought you were white. Now if it were Anothuh Brothuh........
AB, Let's change the game for a second: Several years ago a group of us took our girls to the Arena Theatre for a Brian McKnight concert they wanted to see. Two of the guys in our group were white. Two days later we're all at the Galleria and a couple of guys come up and ask one of our buddies if he was the 'white dude' at the concert. He took no real offense to that. But here's the deal: He *could* have. He could choose to make an issue of it, but realized that being a racial minority (in the strictest sense of the word) that night at the concert lent itself to creating an obvious identifier that the guy obviously used two days later. Here's the difference: If someone references your color in a demeaning or condescending way, then it's 'on'. But at the end of the day we all have to use plain old 'common sense' to quickly determine if there's a personal affront taking place or if the other person is simply using the most obvious distinctive way to identify us. But I don't mind a man taking offense to something as long as there's a consistency to it. In other words, if you would also question someone refering to a white man as 'the white guy over there' when they're in a predominantly black club, for instance, then I applaud that consistency.
How do you identify yourself? I'm the intimidating tall one? I'm the witty closer? I'm the suave piano player? Or I'm the proud black one? From your moniker, I'm going to guess that being black is one of the first ways you identify yourself.
I can understand when people are describing a scene or situation to others and they use "black" or "white" or "Asian". But why would this guy say it to AB? What was he going to say? No, I was the white guy last night? I identify people the following way: Women-how big their boobs are. Men-how big their girlfriend/wife's boobs are. Gay men-how fabulous their shoes are.
The guy was not quite sure if he was the black guy at the club or not, so if he wasn't the black guy at the club, AB could have replied, "Nope, I wasn't at that club..." I think it's a bit ironic that a guy with the monikor "Another Brother" is curious as to how we identify people.
i don't think it's wrong to identify a human by their skin color. i'm not racist and i'm "white." i refer to my dog, when she's running around with other dogs, as the "black" dog -- because her fur/skin is black. whatever. if a "black" or "dark-skinned" or "asian" or "whatever" friend of mine refers to me as "white," why should i care? my skin is "white." the PC-ness of modern society is silly. maybe i should stop referring to my 4Runner as "gold." or, for that matter, maybe i should stop calling it a "4Runner." well, maybe i shouldn't refer to it as an "SUV." wow, now that i think about it, "4-wheel drive vehicle" might be a little too specific. i'll just refer to it as my "motorized vehicle." i just hope my bike doesn't get jealous...
As I said earlier I really don't care that much, it's basically my observation about observations. I'm a narcissist, I identify myself in many fabulous ways. "Black dude", while on the list, is not where I'd begin. My moniker may separate me from the rest of my male siblings on the site. Where is you head? Did I maybe meet you in a grocer...never mind. I get that. But if your friend had another profound distinction (if he was on stage that night maybe) it would be different. I think that's more of my point. The Looney Bin. Great club!
I did not get the feeling AB was offended and hurt it was more of . . just a observation of the situation Rocket River
I went to Frenchy's fried chicken by UH the other day. I came in a group where only one of us was black. Everyone was looking at us wondering what the hell we were doing there. I wanted to get a sign that said "I love Fried Chicken too." I am indian so maybe they thought I just Black with nice hair (I got that a lot when I was young), but many people were mean mugging the white women with us.
How is it that the word 'Brother' is so racially exclusive? Wow, I guess I've been reading "The Brothers Grimm" all wrong. Question: Was "O Brother Where are Thou" a movie about a missing black dude? Help me out.
I don't even know what to way about this The whole situation just paints a funny picture in my head Rocket River . . . still the best chicken in Houston
maybe it was. . . BACK IN THE 70's!!! what is funny is to watch white guys who talk more slang than I ever did. Or some that don't really but think that is the way t talk to me Hello Bob Hello Howard WHAT UP PLAYA PLAYA PIMPLICIOUS RIVER uhm. . . ok . . i guess Rocket River
