Talent is rare, subjective and actually quite inefficient for most managers to evaluate and rank amongst their staff. They just want people who can make decisions, rationalize screwups, cultivate relationships and remind them of themselves twenty years ago.
I disagree with that on many levels. 1) Their time table to notice your ability may not match your own. Thus you may miss opportunities while you're waiting for them to notice you. 2) People may notice, but unless you make them actually act on it instead of just saying "hey that guy's good at that" they may not actually do anything to help you. 3) Other people are self-promoting while you're not, you're losing out.
It ain't bragging if it's true. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Tctfq4tplQ4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I'd be curious what the poll would show for: 1. Promote yourself. 1a. If so, what is your profession and title in company. 2. Do not promote yourself. 2a. If so, what is your profession and title in company. I'd be curious, which one wins out. From what I see in the corporate world... promote yourself. Not everyone will like it, but the likelihood of you moving up high is better. The guys in the top positions are very good politically. Don't mean people like them. But the right people do.
I like the docs and analytics suggestion. Put down hard facts on how much you saved the company or earned for them. Promote this occasionally to your boss and others (genuinely) while you're at it. if you don't talk to or like your boss, you still have to convey to him that you're covering his ass and making him look good. Even if he knows it, it's not his job to remember that during raise time. He probably worried about his own review or some squeaky wheel promoting himself
Pretty much Also . . . I think if you show you are TOO VALUABLE to him he will want to KEEP you there to keep covering his ass It is a dicey and prickly situation Rocket River
This same exact issue has just come up with me also last month. I never found the right terminology to convey it to others. Just been feeling a sense of discomfort and was trying to analyze and put the pieces together. But thats what it is - Self Deprecating vs Self Promotion. Self promotion has negative connotations, so I guess its more MARKETING ONESELF. Self deprecating does NOT work in getting ahead because it can mean self-MUTING. Its not only that self promoters just enhance their own standing. Its also that they CAN craft YOUR own image FOR you to the others in the workplace without your involvement. In order for some worms to get ahead, they WILL MARGINALIZE YOU to put themselves in a better light. While you're "staying in your lane", they're doing whatever they can to be at the top of the hill. It IS arrogance. But to management it'll look like its being "punctual" and "committed".
It is like being in traffic . . .a long line of cars Some *SShole rolls by you going 50 on the shoulder [not a real lane]. You *KNOW* some sorry punk is going to LET HIM IN about a mile ahead He has gotten ahead . .. you could do the same but you are not an *sshole! Rocket River
In my line of work, self-promoters are toxic and avoided at all costs. Calm, humble, analytical, and decisive are what's important. If someone comes along and it's all about them, then nobody will work with them.
