I don't know much about the story.. but it seems like his representatives are the ones who don't want him to go to the Bucks. Just let the kid play
he needs to suck it up and play for the team that drafted him. Once he plays for 3 or 4 years and be a FA, he can go play wherever he wants...Spoiled athletes don't know how good they got it.
Maybe lightning could strike twice, and the Rockets can steal another high draft choice. Perhaps Battier + Head + Novak in exchange for the rights to Yi and Bobbie Simmons. Simmons was overpaid even before he missed all of last year with feet and ankle injuries and is due 30 million over the next three years. This would give the Bucks a starting SF in Battier, put them another $1.5 million below the cap to sign a free agent, and relieve them of what was ranked the 10th worst contract in the NBA: http://winningtheturnoverbattle.blogspot.com/2007/06/worst-contracts-in-nba.html Imagine the marketing bonanza of the "New Chinese Wall" of Yao and Yi? I'm not sure Les would effective eat a $30 million contract to get him, however.
NBA draft system was mainly built to make sure sucky teams can maintain its attractivness. It is not law written in stone, and certainly its fairness to players is debatable. Over the years, there have been young budding players screwed up by playing on the bad teams that they didnt want to go, end up wasting 3,4 years of their career. The team can select players, but the players also have rights to express their willingness to play for the teams. Obviously, 99% of kids selected are eager to play in NBA and get paid, so it's a non-issue even if they dont want to play the teams that select them. They will play anyways and getting paid millions for 3 years is not all that bad. But in Yi's case, it's different. Dan Fegan needs to make sure Yi will do well in NBA because endorsment deals are at stake. There are business invloved besides basketball. I feel sorry for Yi because the kid probably wouldnt mind playing for the Bucks. The team can select the player, and the player can refuse to play for the team. It's a fair game. Who will get hurt more, that's another story and interesting to see how it develops.
i'm gonna go with the good old 1st amendment there. the players have every right to say they don't want to play for a team. the team has every right to say they're going to hold onto your rights and ensure you don't get paid. then it's just a matter of who blinks first. however, i personally could never get behind some player who refuses to play for the team that drafted them.
Ditto, except I might feel stronger about the rights of the team than you do. Making millions of dollars and playing in the NBA is a great privilege. The rules in place were negotiated by collective bargaining, which both sides are required to follow. The CBA (collective bargaining agreement) does not allow drafted rookies to choose where they play. Using your choice of words, I hope the Bucks never blink. After he was drafted, I was looking forward to following Yi and wishing him the best. The longer this drags on the more I dislike the guy. As stated in the other thread, continuing to blame Yi's representation for the standoff instead of Yi himself looks increasingly silly.
I was sympathetic to Yi but this is absurd. Kohl is a US Senator and owner and he has to write a letter to Yi. http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=626935 Milwaukee Bucks owner Herb Kohl has written a letter to the team's first-round draft pick, Yi Jianlian, requesting a meeting with the 7-foot power forward. Yi did not meet with Bucks officials or have the traditional post-draft day news conference Friday. Instead he moved on from New York to Dallas, where he played with the Chinese national team against the U.S. Under-19 team Sunday night. Kohl, speaking at the state Democratic convention Saturday, said the Bucks were "reaching out" to Yi. "We're going to try to establish personal contact with him and his family," Kohl said. "I wrote him a letter yesterday (Friday). I requested a meeting with him and his family. "Our basketball people, our general manager and coach, we're all in the process of reaching out to try to establish a constructive dialogue with him and his family and his representatives."
If Yi's stays in China, what Bucks or NBA is going to do? Of course, Bucks loses big if Yi stays in China. But Yi lose big too if he has to stay in China. Very interesting. Who will blink first? I am betting Yi will be in Buck's uni next year.
LOL, Kohl is trying to sell more beer in China for Miller. This shows Yi's playing or not in Milwaukee is beyond basketball for both sides.
Yi is hurting himself by behaving like a spoiled brat. Many people have to share the responsibility for this mess but I blame it mainly on this kid. He should take the blame if he choose to let his agent continue to run the show.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/basketball/nba/07/03/yi.trade.ap/ Agent: Yi seeking trade from Bucks Posted: Tuesday July 3, 2007 8:37AM; Updated: Tuesday July 3, 2007 8:49AM SHANGHAI, China (AP) -- Yi Jianlian's Chinese agent says he's talking to other teams about a possible trade away from Milwaukee. Yi, the Bucks' top pick, has refused to talk about the prospect of playing for Milwaukee after he was picked sixth overall in last week's NBA draft. However, Yi's agent Zhao Gang was quoted as telling the official China Daily newspaper that he was already in contact with other franchises that have expressed an interest in the 19-year-old power forward. "His representatives and I won't sit here and do nothing just because he was picked by Milwaukee," Zhao was quoted as saying. "We are considering Yi's future at the Bucks and are looking at trade possibilities," Zhao said. Agent Dan Fegan pushed for Yi to go to a city with a heavy Asian influence. According to census data, Milwaukee has a little more than 1,200 Chinese residents. Yi is in Dallas with the China National Senior Team for two exhibition games. He said Monday that he was looking forward to playing against the Dallas Mavericks Summer Team on Tuesday. But he declined for the second straight day to talk about the NBA. "I don't want to talk about that," he said and walked away from reporters. Yi courted controversy before the draft when access to his workouts was tightly restricted to just a few teams. There have even been questions about his true age, with some reports putting his birth year as early as 1984, partly because sports authorities are known to report their players as younger than they actually are to keep them eligible for junior competitions. Yi's apparent disappointment with being picked by Milwaukee contrasted strikingly with fellow China national team member Sun Yue's delight at his selection by the Los Angeles Lakers. Sun was the 40th player selected.
This is the fault of the bucks they were told not to pick Yi and were refused a work out... yet the Genius of a representative of our great government (insert sarcasm here) moved the team that was told our player does not want to play for you and will not work out for you still drafted him. So the bucks were told no more than once and still they decided to draft him i feel no sympathy for the bucks... now i suggest they shut up and accept our offer of Rafer and JLIII for YI and brian skinner
this totally ticks me off. this is a baseball mentality. worse, its a bunch of foreigners dissing the small market town. David Stern needs to stop this crap right now, or it will open the flood gates of crap foreign players saying " I dont want to play here cause there are no Greeks ". Its extremely disrepectful to the NBA also, its an honor to be selected to play in the NBA. I could careless if he's from China and we buy tons of Walmart stuff from them. I hope the Bucks DONT TRADE HIM and let him rot in the CBA.
