If you still drink lots of soda then switch to diet soda... that helped me lose about 10 pounds. Do you also drink lots of beer? One thing I realize is that sometimes the most useless calories we take in are from drinks not food.
just cut back on your sugar in the items you drink. no soda, minimal juice. Burn more calories than you take in and you'll lose weight. Now if you want to lose fat while maintaining or building muscle, then thats a more complex formula.
drinking? the amount that eat could also affect your weight. Pho is liquid heavy so its easy to gain weight right afterwards. When do you eat? Eating before bed is bad? Do you have huge meals when you eat? Cuz you should eat in spurts of little amounts 5-6 times daily. Are you gaining muscle mass, cuz that would significantly increase your weight. My buddy is the same height and build, be he's also all muscle and dude is pushing 170, while i'm 5'10 lean, and 145.
Simple cut out the sugars and starches from your diet and you'll drop plenty of pounds in one month. I've dropped 15 pounds in 3 weeks.
There sure is. You can use something called the Harris-Benedict equation to get a good ballpark figure. There are more complex equations that will give you a much better figure (because they will take into account your body composition - muscle has much higher metabolic properties than fat), but generally the Harris-Benedict formula is satisfactory enough. Harris-Benedict Equation: 66 + (13.7 x W) + (5 x H) - (6.8 x A) W = actual weight in kg (kg = weight in lb/2.2) H = height in cm (cm = height in inches x 2.54) A = age in years While I'm glad to see you are dropping sugar, etc from your diet, half of your weight loss is certainly water-weight. If you diet was high in sugar, sodium, or bad starches beforehand, then you would be carrying a lot of excess water-weight, so this isn't necessarily a problem, but if you return to an unhealthy diet, the water-weight will come back just as quickly as it left. A general rule of thumb is you want to be shooting for a weight loss of ~2.5 lbs per week. This will help you lose fat without sacraficing any muscle in the process. Of course, people can lose more than this, but they are either losing precious muscle or they actually know what they are doing.
I also noticed my metabolism slow down in my early 20's, and I got all the way up to 250 at one point. I lost most of the fat a few years ago by just eating better. I've been making a real effort the past few months to get in good shape. I'm down to around 195 now (I'm 6'4). From looking at your diet, you really need to eat more! Mix in some healthy fats such as nuts, forget the salad and have a well rounded meal with a protein source such as chicken or fish. Here's a sample of what my diet is lately, maybe it will help you: Meal 1: Grape nuts cereal, 1 banana, 1 scoop of Optimum Nutrition Whey Powder Meal 2: Plain organic yogurt, handful of almonds Meal 3: Myoplex Light MRP shake Meal 4: Package of Tuna, Sweet Potato Meal 5 (after workout): 1 scoop of Whey, 1/3 cup of oats Meal 6: Chicken breast, veggies, brown rice Meal 7: Cup of lowfat cottage cheese, tablespoon of natural peanut butter
Get off your fat azz and exercise... j/k Are you sure its fat? Sounds like you do a lot of cardio, so it may be muscle...Do a measure your body fat (at gym) and gauge it that way...I measure mine by how my clothes fit...I don't use the scale because muscle weighs more than fat... Right now, I'm 10 lbs too heavy, so I'm at the gym 4 - 5 times a week, but do more cardio to slim down...I've also watched what I eat, no fast food,etc..good luck...
Wow, thanks everyone (especially Franchise3, you seems really really know what you are talking about) for the advice. I am going to start trying the "Franchise Diet".
i got real big just over a year ago, 6'1 and 235 pounds. and i'm now at 190 about 14 months later. what i did was cut down dramatically on sodas, i have maybe one or two a week now. the main thing i found was, that eating out is bad for maintaining weight or losing weight. there are a TON of calories and FAT in fast food and restaurants, it can also become expensive. we sound about the same size, and i try to stay around 2,000-2,200 calories and about 20-24 grams of fat per day. excercising around 3 hours a week will keep you at a good weight and maintain a slow but steady weight loss. anything where you lose more than 4 pounds a week isn't healthy and isn't conducive to keeping that weight off for good.
Haha, good luck! I like helping people out with fitness because I love seeing how happy people are when they get the results they are looking for. There are a ton of people out there that have the motivation, persistence, and desire to get into shape, but they lack correct fitness information. With all the fad diets, infomercials, and fitness myths out there, it's not surprising that people don't know how to effectively go about losing fat. Good luck with the weight loss. I also wanted to throw in the fact that you should drink plenty of water throughout the day (64+ oz) and take a multivitamin if you don't already do that. I meant to add that in earlier, but totally forgot.
I've gained almost 18 pounds of fat in the last year. I know what my problem was, I didn't work out nearly at all last semester. Definetly not letting that happen again.
Try and eat 5-6 six small meals a day to boost your metabolism. Cut out processed foods and fast foods and you should see results. Lots of veggies, chicken, tuna, eggs, fruits and other stuff thats natural.
I've lost 55 lbs since Feb. I bought a bike and I ride like crazy...I still eat a lot of the foods I used to enjoy but in drastically smaller portions. I drinks lots of water...play basket ball and hit the gym a few days a week. I just registered for the MS-150. That's my next challenge! I have an uncle who was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and I was scared ass hell I was going to end up in the same boat. I decided that day I was going to have a serious life-style change...It's going on a year and man I feel GREAT! If anyone wants to ride in the MS-150 hit me up...I don't know anyone else riding in it (my friends have no motivation).
not eating always works wonders. "so for all you that are depressed and not eating, keep going." - Dr. Phil
I started a diet at the beginning of the year and have lost about ten pounds. Just eat less and move around more. OK, it's not that simple, but there are a few tips that most people have said in this thread but are important enough to be repeated. water, water, water! There's a reason your body is 80% water. Drink some water, then drink some more. The reason you want to drink water is that water is essential for proper kidney function. If your kidneys don't have enough water, they don't work as efficiently. If your kidneys can't do their job, then your liver has to pick up the slack for them. If your liver is doing the kidneys' job, it can't do it's own job, which is metabolize fat. Sodas = pure evil. A can of soda has about 120 calories, which usually negates any calories you might save by eating a lower calorie meal. The problem with sodas is that they have a lot of calories, but don't fill you up, so you just keep drinking them and drinking them, thinking that it's OK. Diet sodas are OK, but they're still no substitute for water. If you drink one soda per day, that's about 800-1000 unneccessary calories you are ingesting. Also, never get a soda at a restaurant, because they have free refills. Plus, the cups at most restaurants are pretty big, so if you gulp down two sodas, you're probably drinking 32 ounces. Plus, if you get water with your meal, you'll save 2 bucks on the check. Eating habits: Like everybody was saying, eating smaller meals throughout the day is healthier than eating a couple of really big meals. One trap people fall into is that they starve themselves throughout the day and eat a huge meal at the end of the day to "reward" themselves. It should be the other way around. You should be eating higher caloric meals in the morning and afternoon to keep your energy up. Ironically, a great way to keep your metabolism up is by eating. NEVER eat right before you go to bed. When you sleep, your metabolism goes down, and that meal you ate mostly gets turned into fat. Always allow at least two hours from your last meal until bed time
At first I didn't want to, but now I am believing that stupid commercial with that CHOLESTEROL pill that says that you get the cholesterol not only from the FRANKs you ate yesterday, but from your uncle Frank. I think this is pure bull. How in the heck can you get fat from your uncle? Bologna (yummy!). What is this pill, anyway? I forget.
