What does it mean to have a negative racial resentment score. Are you not just neutral but you're positively happy for advantages other races have over you?
This is common in social science research. Lots of questions use a Likert scale where the center (if you were measuring ideology, that would be the "independent" answers) is at 0, and either ends of the scale (Strong Democrat and Strong Republican) are equidistant from 0, with one holding a positive value and one holding a negative. It is most common for Democrat to end up as the negative values with the Republicans in the positives because the left-right paradigm looks right on a number line. Just guessing a little because I don't feel like digging through The Economist's site to try and find their methodology, but it would appear that four survey questions were used, so my assumption is that the questions were asked with a five point Likert scale (Strongly disagree, disagree, neutral, agree, strongly agree) and a person's score is tallied by adding up the scores of all four responses. So, -4 on that chart would indicate a moderate lean against racial resentment.
Which -phobic deplorable was the dude who shot up that club in Orlando? Or wow about the folks in Milwaukee who rioted after a suspect who pointed a gun at a cop was killed by that cop? Or how about the deplorables who murdered Dwyane Wade's cousin - in broad daylight, while she was walking her child in a stroller?
Deplorable is a step up from Clinton supporters. Greatest country in the world and this is what we have to choose from!
What deplorable thoughts to Clinton 'supporters' have? Do they have racist tendencies? Do they support a presidential candidate with absolutely zero nuanced policy information? Her beliefs are pretty ****ing moderate? Has she ever said anything about a desire to ban an entire religious group from immigrating to this country? Did she make up lies incriminating pretty much all Muslims in an American major city as terrorist supporters? Please elaborate. Or is this your 'gut' feeling?

I really don't even know what 'step up' means in your context? You need to be more careful with your diction? I just hate these false equivalences. Hillary Clinton is by no means a candidates that I would personally chose if given more than two options but there is a vast gulf of difference in respectability and knowledge between the two candidates.
