It's like referees in sports. The best ones are the ones you never know are there. They're doing their job and don't expect fanfare...don't make a lot of noise...don't abuse their power for simple reason that they have it.

To be honest I bet it's for the same reason that so many men on this forum are dating hot girls, claim to be amazing in bed, are great at sports and have great jobs.

It's the internet and people lie.

There are a lot of former lunch-money-victims who are cops, and more than a few douches who became cops because, well, they had to do something with those biceps after the military. You know, the military; bastion of open-mindedness. (I was in the military police. Liked it because I was stationed in Sicily. Didn't like it for the officious redneck attitudes. Worst coworkers? Fellow Texans.)

I mean, where do never-had-their-ass-kicked-like-they-deserved-bullies go when they need a job?

Apologies to the greater percentage of cops who are all right and just doing their jobs.

I've had my own bad experiences with cops in Houston, back in the 1960's, for doing absolutely nothing. One time, a cop that pulled me over, disappointed that he couldn't find anything in my car to arrest me for, took his flashlight, busted one of the tail lights of my car, and then wrote me a ticket for the busted tail light, chuckling while he did it. After the latest Supreme Court ruling, he could have taken me to jail and had me strip-searched, had he felt like it.

What do these experiences have to do with how I view the police today? Nothing. That was back when HPD was ruled, literally, by Chief Herman Short, an honest to god card carrying member of the KKK. HPD during his long reign was chronically short (no pun intended) of officers. Why? Because if they didn't fit Herman Short's idea of what a cop should be, brutal and bigoted, then they tended not to be hired in the first place, and some decided that leaving the department was the better part of valor. Yet that was then, and this is now, a far different era. I expect the average cop to be fair and honest. They have to prove to me that they are not before I will condemn them.

The premise of this thread is absurd. One can go their entire life and not have an experience similar to some of the ones I have had. And someone like me can be intelligent enough to realize that the actions of a few do not make the great majority less than honest and hard working, doing a job most of us wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

cops get treated like crap and deal with losers multiple times a day. Everyone has had an experience with a jerk cop but not nearly as many times as you have had a bad customer service experience. Don't break the law and they end up being pretty much the same thing.

One year in college many years ago, I got pulled over 13 times in two semesters ...and not one ticket.
Strike 1: I was driving a black 66 Impala (inherited from my grandmother and was in near mint condition - sweet car)
Strike 2: Regularly driving through West U and Bellair cause that was the route I had to take from my appt to school (Rice).
    Strike 3: Black

Typically I'd have 2-4 cop cars involved cause they'd call for backup.

Excuse: I wasn't wearing a seat belt. ...which of course is a lap belt so it isn't visible externally. So why do they need backup for a seatbelt violation?

I have several more stories but I'll spare you.

Generally, I hate cops. I don't trust cops as far as I can throw them. They ARE NOT looking out for my best interest and I view them as a necessary evil. I will do everything possible to avoid any contact with police. I recognize the need and realize there are good cops ...but what are the odds that I will get a helpful cop at a time of need? I say, very low. Best to avoid.

another problem with cops is their union mentality to defend any cop no matter how big of a dirt bag they are and the union reality of how hard it is to discipline one.

I've never been arrested, but did meet cops on various occasions like car breakdown, speeding tickets, etc. My main feeling is that they come across like they don't really want to talk to you beyond what's neede, and feel like my questions or comments as ignorant and unnecessary.

I don't have a problem with that, as they probably take a lot of crap from people. So generally I keep my mouth shut, cooperate, and processes go smoothly. A bit awkward perhaps. But I've never felt like any cop was overstepping his bound.

    Let's also considered . ... . If I catch a cop
who is great to everyone .. but he catches me the day he finds out his partner BANGED HIS WIFE
    well . . . I might catch some of that . . . .

I would be that cop's sole complaint in 10 yrs. . . but
    for me . . . out of the 4 times I dealt with cops. . . 25% were dicks!

I would venture to say . . some of the cops that messed with people here
might have caught someone else and been the courteous man of the hour

Ever watch the movie Crash I think [or was it Traffic]
In One scene the Cop all but fingerbangs the woman on a routine stop
    but
Later he pulls her from a burning car . .. . Which she fights him and is scared of him because of his previous behavior

Way to misuse the word "union" to bust on unions.

I hope that that 'something' is not placing the blame for bad cops and the failure to discipline them at the feet of the whole idea of unionization or collective bargaining among workers.

Because that is what he meant. Any excuse to bash the unions for some of these guys. What can they say? They just really love bosses.

One time there was this cop camped outside the parking lot of a head shop hoping to catch people with drugs (this was in Cali incase anybody is wondering).

I went there to purchase a bong (I broke a friends bong and went to replace it). At the time, my car had no front license plate (it fell off) but I already had an outstanding fix it ticket on that (which I am sure the cop knows). So as I am driving away, I get pulled over.

I am not sure why (probably because I was a stupid 19 year old) I opened my door after the cop came up to my car. Really am not sure why I did that. But the cop made me get out of my car and searched my vehicle. Not even sure if that is legal.

He claimed he found some "mar1juana flakes" but I was pretty sure it was bull****. All I had was a brand new bong and that is legal. Regardless, I showed him the outstanding fix it ticket and he let me go.

Not really harassed but he tried his best to.

    Ok now this makes sense

It's no wonder you cannot reason properly in the Trayvon Martin case thread

You're biased due to a personal experience with the Sanford police

The general public does not use a gun in their job. The general public does not engage with the most violent people in this country. I thought it would be common sense that a cop would have a greater chance of being in a predicament were unnecessary violent action is taken than a school teacher or bank teller.
