But typo is in the dictionary as is ain't and anyways, both of which are informal but they are accepted terms or words. Sorry, I didn't find commish in any dictionary. I'm seriously considering in following in fadeaway's footsteps.
By the way, did you ever play the game I mentioned? I think "dood" is used over 200 times during the game. B
No...I can't seem to find enough time to actually play any new games. I found myself with a few minutes last week to cool myself from a particularly perplexing technical problem, and decided to fire up the PS2.....and I found myself firing up Midway Classics so I could play Robotron and Joust. Those old games on new hardware are a blast.
I did not find "commish" in any dictionary either, but I said it was a weak kill against Heath if it was accepted. Also, I think the post that used "commish" was 10 minutes before the game officially started so it would not matter anyway. I wanted to make a point that there is a huge grey area in this game. B
That's just silly. So, you want to give us Contributing Members a BIGGER advantage than we already have? If you can't edit your message in 3 minutes, you deserve to lose, IMHO. The whole idea of the game is to be flawless the first time around. If you let us edit without fear of punishment, this spelling game could go on for a year. Codell, what's the ruling here?
I would consider pulling out myself, but it looks as if I might have a shot at winning if I keep sucking out the fun for everyone else. B
I was only kidding about typo, which definitely shouldn't be a kill, and y'all, which is a tough call. "Y'all" is a contraction for "you all," and the more common mistake is "ya'll" which actually drives me nuts. But I was only kidding about the kill. I don't make those kinds of ticky tack calls. I was just trying to make a point about intent. "Could of" or "should of" wouldn't be slang. They'd be misspellings of "could've" and "should've." Totally different. My protest to B's kill was made in order to distinguish between a BBS spelling game and a copy editing contest, which necessarily have different rules. (And I know the strict ones -- I've worked as a copy editor and as a technical writer.) I agree that slang represents a gray area, but I still disagree that I broke any of the posted rules of the game. Even so, I feel bad that fadeaway dropped out. I'm gonna go ahead and do the same in hopes the game'll be more fun for the rest of you. p.s. If "want's" is a kill, so is "gonna." Even though I still (Stubbornly? Maybe. I'm stubborn. But you all knew that.) say neither should be.
What a shame that something which is supposed to be fun is turning out like this. Now everyone is getting worked up. It seems like the obvious rules would be: no grammar nitpicks, no slang (e.g. seeing if I spelled "nitpicks" right above - there probably is no right way), and no editing. And no kills in gray areas - wait for them to make an obvious spelling mistake or typo. But maybe that's too obvious.
isabel.. yeah, I looked and saw that.. that is why I asked. I thought that was odd. To be honest, I never knew which one to use because I always saw both spellings so much and figured I and a lot of other people probably spell it wrong half the time. Then I noticed you and B spelt it "gray" and "grey" in same thread so that made me look it up.
Are people getting worked up? I guess I am dense when it comes to that....all I see are some talks on various forms and rules...this always happens with these contests... It is real difficult to come up with rules that cover all situations...let's just keep it simple....obvious mistakes....missing apostrophes...and wrong tense of words. Leave out proper names and slang... I think it safe to say that we all know if a word is slang or not.
from some Yahoo dictionary someone posted. i say i'm still in. matchup SYLLABICATION: match·up PRONUNCIATION: AUDIO: mchp KEY NOUN: The pairing of two people or things, as for athletic competition or for comparison
b.... lol actually I wasn't going to kill you.. I just saw that Isabel used it spelt gray in her post right after reading yours and was clueless as to which was right
