This is true. Learned all this in my computer forensics class. It's amazing the amount of information you can get from personal technology.
Usually only takes minutes, but I read that a few thousand p*rn images could easily increase it to 20 minutes or so.
I know people that do PC repairs for stores like Best Buy...if you bring a computer in that had personal pictures on it, they will find them. They just search for the obvious things first (folders named "stuff"), and then go lower level like the things being described in this thread.
I used to FDisk Killdisk some HDs with data that needs to be wiped. You can still probably find those online to download onto a floppy.
