One interesting note: I know the site was just a prototype...but they had links to the various shows on the left of the page: morning show, drive, etc. One of the links, I can't remember the exact name, linked to the Jim Rome web page. Could Rome be making the jump over to 790 or was that just a test link that no one was meant to see???
If 790 has streaming radio, then that is awesome!!! If 610 is finally forced to push streaming radio, then that will be even better!
Yeah the streaming sucks. Braindead Infinity Dinosaurs. Chuckie Palillo will be their PM drive guy and I wish him all the luck in the world. Not necessarily the good luck, but luck nonetheless. Yes competition is good and healthy for the sports appetite of Houston but understand, just like Mega 101 this is a money deal for the CC machine. They were not getting enough money out of the old people listening to star 790 KBME so they flipped it to a more profitable format. It will be national shows all day and then Chuckie at 3. We will be using Sporting News. They can freaking have Dan Patrick. Any astute web observer would see his picture on our website over the last 2 weeks and see that I have been having a field day with Dan Patrick. Keep checking for updates on the SprtsRadio 610 crew portion of these wonderful photos.
national shows all day is boring as hell. if that's their format, i'm not sure they'll be a sports station all that long. particularly since the best national show is still on 610 with the Jungle. it may not be my favorite, but it blows the doors off other nationally syndicated shows.
I don't particularly like Rome or Patrick... but when Rome is off on one of his rants, it can be either really entertaining, or really awful... but you know it'll be a good 7 minute rant no matter what (with various phrases constantly repeated for emphasis). Patrick tries too hard, and it shows... honestly, the best parts of that show (and there aren't many of them) have been simply when they're just talkin about sports. Not music, not tatoos, not some b-list celebs who they're close friends with... just sports (what a concept!). This move will defenitely make 610 better... and as for 790, I'm pretty sure they're starting out w/ mostly national shows because they just don't have the personell (yet) to make it more local... just like Kenny-Rich were the only local 610 guys back in the late 90's, while 740 still covered the Rockets (and were still the local sports authority). bottom line... competition is good.
"Disgusting..... (10 second pause).... 'epic'.... (15 second pause) "And the Detroit fans role in this... 'phenominal'..." (28 second pause) "That fan's look when Artest was coming over to pimp-slap him... 'hilarious.'" (18 second pause... followed by a 10 second pause, in case you didn't get it.)
LonghornFan...I think Roberts is on today @ 4PM....as a matter of fact, as soon as I typed that in, Rich just came on in a commercial stating the same. Bummer...I'll be in class from 4 til 7. Chance...is this an audition, or a sign of things to come?
1. 610 had lance and john in the mix by late 96..at least by jan. 97 2. i remember a show with ed fowler on 610 as well. i find it hard to believe that 790 couldn't round up a couple of others to start the station off with locally.
Agree with both of these. The Houston Chronicle was better when they had the Post to compete against, competition will only make 610 better. The only thing bad is that they've broken up the Rich-Charlie tandem, which was Houston's best. I'd bet those 2 team up again, sometime, maybe at 790. I'm not a fan of national shows, but at least this will give me something to listen to besides home improvement on Saturday mornings. local sports > national sports > non-sports talk
Chance - I doubt you can respond much to this, but is there any fear around your station that Rich might eventually move to join Charlie over at 790?
yes. but fear is the wrong word. 790 is contractually obligated to carry ESPN programming in the morning so there will be no morning show. (my sources say)
That doesn't sound good. I don't WANT to listen to streaming 790, but if you leave me no choice... Please tell me streaming audio for 610 is at least being discussed by Infinity upper management. C'mon, Chance. Give me something I can cling to here. I need hope.
I'll check it out when John and Lance start talking about their divorces for the umpteenth time or Lance starts another sentence off with, “my father, a coach in Cleveland”.
I wish 610 would get off their a$$e$ and do what needs to be done: Hire Jay Mohr and Frank Caliendo. They'd be the the hottest duo in radio and would lead to a lucrative syndication deal.
