yeah there was a home invasion at my house on march 3rd. me and my bro came home after going to the rockets nuggets game around 1 in the monrning. we parked in the driveway, got out and 3 guys forced us into the garage at gunpoint...it was 3 people related to a new orleans gang. if y'all work late or come home late, be careful. it's something that could happen to anyone

there was huge fight between houston and new orleans students at westbury high
they interviewed some kids and they said 'some people were fighting because of different taste in rap music'.

also know a teacher who had some new orleans kids in her 2nd grade class, she said none of them knew how to read.

new orleans was messed up before the hurricane, this proves how horrible the city/state school system is there. they need to fix more than just the levees in that state.

Almost everyone here seems quick to blame the Katrina evacuees yet I will point out in the article it says

If fact it says twice in the article that the trends were happening before the evacuees arrived.

Any one got the comparisons between Houston and other large metro areas in regards to the number of policemen to the size of the city?

i know people don't like to admit it but maybe if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck then its a duck. its sad to admit it but houston took on a large amount of a crime ridden city and now houston's crime rate is going up.

in other news austin had its 3rd murder of the year.

I read in the Chronicle a couple of years ago, something to the effect that if you stayed out of cantina's after midnight your chances of being murdered in Houston drop by a significant percentage, like half.

Or could it be that Houston was a crime ridden city already that got a large influx of people most susceptable to being victims and perpetrators of crime exacerbating existing trends.

I will point back to the article that says that the trends towards a rising homicide rate were there already prior to Katrina.

I note that you chose only the numbers that purported to show what you wanted. Here is a better view of the picture, median family income, which has dropped every year since 1999.

I know you feel bad for the Katrina folks due to their circumstances, as do I, but you can't ignore facts. You appear to be doing just that.

Exactly. From what I've read, MS-13 is getting increasingly violent. It is a South American gang that has infultrated Houston and other US cities. The rise in the murder rate, prior to Katrina, was due to them in large part and they have a hold on SW Houston.

Furthermore, it seems a lot of the Katrina crime is gang related turf war. The NOLA gang bangers are trying to carve our their new terriroty fighting against the existing gang bangers.

Very few of the victims are "average" citizens of Houston, from what I understand.

No, it doesn't. The rich may be making more (and are based on the numbers that showed that the top .1% have had their income increase by 497%), but the median family is losing out. More and more people are moving down the economic ladder while the ultra-rich see their paychecks skyrocket.

Don't write checks your azz can't cash, rookie.

houston was a crime ridden city before but that doesn't mean the crime rate wasn't high among the people who came from new orleans to houston. you can't deny that new orleans was full of crime and especially among the poor of new orleans.

and just because you are poor doesn't mean you should be out committing crimes or even have an excuse to commit them.

i think more interestingly from the late 60s to now the average family has another worker. back in the day it was only the husband now its both husband and wife working while earning barely any more money. so much for the conservatives being all about the nuclear family.

Although through March of 2006 New York shows an increase of 4.8% in murders (going from 104 murders through March 2005 to 109 murders during the same peroid in 2006). Overall New York's murder statistics are down 6.8% over the last two years and down a whopping 25% over a five year period and 74% over a 15 year period.

    http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/pdf/chfdept/cscity.pdf

Statistically, New York is the safest big city in America.
