Mechanical forces dishing out -- perceived justice based on math and gears with no human neck to wring aloud, no blooded force to assess middling, trivial wrongdoing. For the greater God For God and country. For state and coast. A reality all too ominous. How soon now the machines begin to creep back in, and enforce the morality of their conspirators with no emotion, as the iron-clad state does, for the greater good of the few, and at the expense of the many.
Can you "provide a link" to support a fact at all? A fact is not a facet of suffering or a proof of life, it is a calculation concocted by those same who want to keep the minds of children wrapped in a tidal wave of unassuming indifference to the real thoughts that pop into their heads, only to be quelled by the monotone reassurance of their parents, who learned long ago to beat down that curiosity and stuff it into a gold-plated box in favor of the American dream, of life, liberty and the pursuit of a white picket fence. "Out of the nursery into the college and back to the nursery; there's your intellectual pattern for the past five centuries of more." - Bradbury
I'm opposed to red light cameras for different reasons: If we allow these cameras, how many intersections in Houston will then receive these cameras? (answer: LOTS of em). Ever driven through Phoenix, AZ? They have cameras equipped with radar that will check your speed on the freeway and mail you a speeding ticket. Do you want that, too? How about if we set up cameras at every stop sign to make sure you come to a complete stop? No? Where do you draw the line? Where does it end? cameras cameras cameras You self-righteous people who say "just obey the law" might want to consider the concept of opening a can of worms and allowing our government to set up automated cameras EVERYWHERE to take money from us every time we step out of line. Maybe this may sound like over-dramatizing things, but I see this as the first step in the wrong direction. It's most important that we eliminate this before precedent is set.
You have a problem with red light cameras? The ignorance in this thread is quite astounding and upsetting me to the point that I am nearly about to throw myself into oncoming traffic, hoping a red light camera will catch my demise, ridicule the art and science I crave, and in one last cruel irony... send me - posthumously - a fine of an arbitrary monetary amount. The Law is not the moral code, it is the interest of those who hold power. Luckily in this case "democracy" seems to have prevailed for once.
Would you like to have cameras set up to automatically send you a ticket every time you ... don't come to a complete stop at a stop sign? park in a no-parking zone? park facing the wrong direction? don't use a turn signal when turning or changing lanes? exceed the speed limit? do not have your car stickers up to date? ALL of these scenarios are technically possible and much, much more. Allowing one of these would open the door to allow all of them. Once you've opened the pandora's box, you can't close it.
The mechanization of justice, arbitration decried by the few minds learned enough to see the haphazard lines of those fooled into under-thinking the severity of handing over mediation to the tools of oppression.
I'm reminded of the movie Demolition Man, when Stallone kept getting automated citations for using profanity.
ALL of you who voted against it are voting specifically for EVERYONE IN HOUSTON TO NOW DIE at ALL red light camera intersections. There's no other way around it - you are all murderers - be ASHAMED. I'll pray for you guys tonight, sinners.
Amen to this. Idiots talking on cell phones are the number 1 traffic problem in this city. 99% of the time when someone is driving like a moron or going 15 mph under the speed limit, they are on a phone.
Yes. Like NPR firing Juan Williams. The PC police are out there too. It is all nanny-statism. "The left wants us to advance to a Utopian environment where no one can say anything about anybody. It'd be sort of this weird -- you know, where we're all just worried about the fragility of stepping on each others toes." - Jon Stewart
I don't care about this issue very much, but it pisses me off that this issue was so overwhelming important that most people only gave a passing look at the underlying facts behind the drainage proposition. Who wants to talk about the details and funding of a massive undertaking like that when we can bellyache about red light cameras!!!
I got a ticket for running a red light. They send you a citation and a link where you can watch a video of your car running the red light. It is clear as day. You can still contest it, you 1st go to some city officials and state your case. If you are not satisfied with their decision, you can take the case to court. Some of the arguments against the red-light camera are not valid. 1) Statistic shows that this technology helps, personal observations with opposite results are just personal experiences, not stats. 2) If you drive at speed limit and see a yellow light, you have time to stop or if you are too close to the intersection, you can go thru the intersection before the light turns red without speeding up. That is a fact. 3) There are many ways to prevent accidents, not being able to implement all of them does not mean one should not implement this one.
