So if the Dallas Cowboys moved to Toronto and became the Toronto Canadians, you would still be as big a fan of them as you are now? You're full of ****. Plain and simple.

Explain to me why people in Cleveland shouldn't be rooting for the Ravens.

    I voted for the Texans.

I'm a huge Rockets fan and Astros fan. But there is just nothing like waking up and knowing the Texans are on at noon. Love it.

Yes, I would. Sorry that's so hard to believe for some of you. My family comes from an area rich in sports tradition (New England area). Generations have followed certain teams (I'm pretty sure you can figure them out). That's just the way it is and always has been in my family. Sports = serious business to some of us.

Watching/attending pro sports events in this city isn't anything like it is in certain other parts of the country. I'm not saying it's better or worse, just different. Like I said, my teams are my teams. Period.

I wouldn't even mind it if they moved to Canada. Hell, that's French people that actually bathe!

    9999 Astros

Part of my problem with the Astros is Drayton McLane. I'm not saying he's a cheapskate or the normal blah blah blah. I still haven't forgotten how he said the Astrodome was a "great facility" and how he killed the idea of a new Oilers' stadium by calling it the "Bud Dome". Then ONE YEAR LATER he says the Astros need a new stadium to replace the Astrodome. What an incredible flop flip. Ever since then, his smiling, folksy demeanor is nothing more than a phony facade to me. The final straw was when he ran off Gerry Hunsicker, who was a great GM and replaced him with the sorry Tim Purpura. And the way he insults everybody's intelligence each year when he says the Astros will be a contender just rubs it in and reminds me afresh of why I don't like him. I want him to sell the team.

You most certainly are saying it's worse. Your tone has been nothing but critical, and you accuse Houstonians of "bandwaggoning" because of the bitter breakup with the Titans. You weren't here at that time (obviously), or you'd understand.

And my city is my city. "Period". I'm not better than you, but you need to understand that for many of us our affections lie with the city of Houston and any team that represents her. I've got no problem with a Titans fan (although I love talking smack with them). Also, I've got no problem with the many people who don't have an emotional connection with the Texans just because they happen to play in Houston. Different strokes for different folks. But you said:
...then you try to sell us that "you're not saying it's worse, only different." Puh-frickin-lease.

...because some people are fans of their city before sports franchises. Why is that so hard for you to understand? Because you think you're better. Because if someone else's mind doesn't work precisely like yours, you "just don't understand" and it's "a huge contradiction" for you.

And comparing sports fandom to things that actually matter like family is simply beyond stupid.

Let me break it down for you...

I only supported the Astros, Oilers, Rockets, Texans, Dynamo because they were my hometown teams. The end.

For what it's worth, I lived in Houston for 33 years before moving to Minnesota. I have never "adopted" any of the Minnesota teams and am fairly apathetic towards them. While inHouston, I saw the Colt .45s at Colt stadium, the Oilers at Jepessen stadium and the Rockets at Hofheinz Pavillion. I will probably never move back to Houston, but I still identify with the Houston teams. Once the Oilers moved, they were no longer a Houston team and my interest waned. I rooted for some of the players (e.g. Bruce Matthews) that I had come to respect, but didn't care about the Titans as a team becuase they were "Tennessee's" team. While I don't actively root against them, I was not disappointed the year they lost the Super Bowl. Had they won, it would have been an empty victory for Oiler fans.

After all we suffered through with the Oilers here in Houston...the very thought of TN getting to celebrate a championship for them...a parade down the streets of Nashville...makes me sick.

Its really close I love the Texans and the tailgating that comes with it but I grew up watching the Rockets since a kid. I love all my home teams even the Dynamos! Im so glad all the postseasons of sports dont interfeer with others :D

But ill take the Houston Rockets as my favorite team because the back to back Championships in 93-94, 94-95 will never be forgotten by any sports fans!!

It had to be better than the soap opera that was the Dallas Cowboys. How did it feel to watch them get blown out by the Eagles with the season on the line?

Texans fans have something to look forward to with Andre Johnson, Steve Slaton, and Mario Williams. I can't wait for next season.

Reading the post it seems like the Texans are on the verge of being the most popular team in town.

They need to start wining/establish a tradition and boom they are there. I agree it will be hard to pass the Rockets because of the championships and great players but this is a football town at heart.

Maybe we will do this again next year after another football season has passed and get different results.

For the folks that voted the Astros, is there no limits on what Drayton can say or no limits on how bad it gets with mlb before you turn a little? I love baseball and I love the Astros but I have been turned off quite a bit over the years.

For me it's a matter of perspective, especially considering I lived through the truly cheap owner times, the Ford Motor credit as owner times and all of the lean team times.

I truly enjoy baseball. For the most part, during the McLane years, the Astros have kept me entertained all season and have been in contention for a playoff spot almost every September. I could obviously ask for more, but I try not to allow myself to get too worked up over whether or not they actually make the playoffs and advance.

I am comfortable with McLane as an owner. As a fan, I know what I've got in him as an owner and what can be expected. He's made bad decisions, he's made good decisions. He is loyal to his players. He generally brings in qualtiy folks and players that I like to root for. Astros fans could have it a lot worse.

    "dittoed"

I will add that the game is bigger than whatever owner or GM may be in place that one may or may not like, and it is also bigger than whatever scandal is currently marring it.

Baseball was around before steroids, just like it was around before collusion, Pete Rose gambling, before Ball Four, before the ugly strikes in '94 and '81.

And, just like with the others, baseball will be around *after* steroids.

In the same manner, the Astros were around before Drayton and they'll conceivably be around after.

It's certainly a shrinking minority preference, but baseball is tops with me. It's the best (to me).

If you can't survive being an Astros fan in the Drayton era of MLB, when can you? We have been immensely more entertaining during that stretch than any other in team history.

As for MLB...I just love baseball. It connects with me on a far far deeper level than the other sports....whether it's little league or big leagues.

Right. I enjoy driving over to watch the 8-year-olds play ball far more than watching the NBA on television. (I hope I don't get kicked out for saying that.)

On a scale of 1-10 (10 be the highest), I'd go like this:

    Astros-9
    Texans-7
    Rockets-5

I know it won't be popular on this board, but just my take. The flow, the intricacies and the excitement out of nowhere make baseball rule. Or just like Lou from the "Yaz" episode on Rescue Me says:

"Life....takes forever, just like baseball. It's a series of long, mind-boggling boring stretches of time where absolutely nothing happens, so you take a nap.... then something jolts you awake....you see something so exciting... and something possibly very, very meaningful just happened but you missed it because you were just so damn bored in the first place."
