Just to clear a couple things up, Rocket!! (I'm not yelling, it's just you have exclamation points in your name), Detroit owes Houston any first round pick, not just their own. I'll repeat that, ANY. Further, Vancouver must give Detroit their own pick next year unless it's top 5 (not just 1 overall) and if they can't the next year unless it's one overall (as another member mentioned). The pick this year has to be the 18th or better and can be from anyone. Detroit has no real incentive for trading down at all unless it helps them screw Vancouver. They will not do it unless that happens. As for valuing of numbers on the picks and comparing them year to year it doesn't work (as was also mentioned). Indiana gave up the 14th pick this year to move from the mid 20's to the early twenties a couple seasons ago. ------------------
With all the talk moving up, if we cannot move up, would it be worth moving one of our lower picks for a lottery pick from last years draft that havent produced, or havent seen much playing time, such as: Stromile Swift Demar Johnson etc...... Of course I would only do this if we had all three first round picks (the 22nd) ------------------
I believe Hobbs is right that it's any. It wouldn't be too strange if it had to be Detroit's, due to the LONG window (I think they have till 04 or 05, and that trade goes back to the Ratliff-Stackhouse deal.) Don't expect Jefferson to be sitting at 18. If we don't take him at 13, someone in the next few picks will. Of course, he could be the mysterious guy that falls a few slots that happens every year, but you can not bank on that. If I'm Detroit, and I can take out Vancouver's best chance/possibility of getting out of their obligation, by dealing with Houston, I might be willing to be a little more generous than usual. ------------------ "That's been a lifelong dream of mine." -Vince Carter, after laying it in on a breakaway, much to the Vancouver crowd's displeasure.
Hobbs, The point of my post was not a trade with Detroit or their incentive. The point was a trade with Vancouver/Memphis and their incentive if they/we decide that is what they/we want. Better for Vancouver to give-up an #18 and a #6 and have a #13 this year than give up a #6 next year and get nothing next year. Personally, I think we should keep all our picks and go for Bradley, Jefferson and K. Johnson. If this does not work out we can always trade on draft day. Further, a draft of this nature would make a few unnamed loosers on our squad absolutely tradeable for one hit wonders to give us cap room in the next year regardless of what Olajuwan does. ROCKET!!! ------------------
Detroit won't do an 13 and 22 for 9 though. The only reason they trade down is to force Vancouver to give them a better pick (better than 18). If they can't do that, they'll stay at 9 and have the 9th and 18th picks (which is preferable to the 13th, 18th and 22nd). So, it might seem fair to you to trade the 13th and 22nd, but it doesn't fit what Detroit would want (and that would be what matters). ------------------
Would the Rockets give up all 3 picks to get #6? The Rocks give 13 & 18 (to be passed to the Pistons) & 22 to the Grizz. The Pistons give #9 to the Grizz. The Grizz give #6 to the Rockets. The Pistons get 13 & 18 (for a 9). The Grizz get a 9 & a 22 and are off the hook with Detroit for a #6. The Rockets get #6 for 3 picks. I think everyone would be happy. If Rodney White continues to impress and goes top 5, that moves alot of talent down to 6. Diop, Battier, Curry? ------------------ GATER
There's no way I would give the #13 & #18 picks for the #9 pick. However, I would seriously consider Live's idea of #13 & #18 to Vancouver for #6 & the release from our obligation to them. Here's a link to a story from the 20th about the Wizards. http://nba.com/news/lottery01_jordan_010520.html?nav=ArticleList How about trading all 3 picks for the Wizards #1 pick? Would Washington do it? As the article indicates, they need lots of players & 3 #1 picks in a deep draft could go a long way toward accomplishing that. If the Wizards would go for that, then let's really press our luck & offer the #1 pick/KT/LOS to Chicago for the #4 pick/Brand. We would still be in a position to take Battier or a center at #4. The scenario that I like best however, (other than Live's idea) is a 3 way trade that I've proposed in another thread. It would involve Houston, Chicago, & Vancouver. I'll modify it to include moving up to the #6 spot. Houston sends Walt/KT/Drew obligation to Chicago. Houston sends LOS/#13 & #18 picks to Vancouver. Chicago sends Fizer/Crawford to Vancouver. Vancouver sends Swift/#6 pick to Houston & releases us from our obligation to them. Vancouver sends Bibby to Chicago. We could let Vancouver think we're considering trading the #13/18 picks to Detroit for the #9 pick. That might motivate them to make the deal & if we have to, we could also throw in the #22 pick as well. We've got both Chicago & Vancouver over a barrell right now. Let's screw 'em. Although, in all honesty, I think this trade helps all 3 teams. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Hottoddie (edited May 25, 2001).]
