Houstonians are really going to miss the Jay Leno guy, Cheap Trick, etc.. when The Rolling Stones and Santana visit Houston.:)

Santana... blurgh. The world's longest crappy jam session. They've come before, and they'll come again, and you still couldn't pay me to sit at the Woodlands and go to sleep on the hill while Rob Thomas wanks his way through 'Smooth' and everyone gets overly excited by their poor cousin's version of 'Black Magic Woman'. It's nice that the Rolling Stones are coming, but I don't think it undercuts my basic point, which is that far more touring acts go to Austin and Dallas and even New Orleans but not Houston than they *should*, considering Houston's enormous population. Fourth largest US city! There's just no excuse.

I'm not going to read every damn post in this thread, but from what I've skimmed across it seems that non-Austinites are going out of their way to bash Austin while the alleged "elitists" in Austin haven't really portrayed themselves in that manner when discussing the merits of the different Texas towns.

Do you have any evidence of more tours going to Austin and Dallas than Houston? Not just this month, but lets say by the year? When I lived in Austin, I remember alot of Austinites having to make trips to other cities, even the radio givaways would include a bus ticket to Houston or S.A.:)

OK, here's my evidence: Pollstar *consistently* has at least twice as many acts playing Austin as Houston. That's over the several years I've been looking at that website. My other evidence is personal: during the four years I lived in the USA, Elvis and I drove to see literally *dozens* of bands in Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, and New Orleans because they weren't coming to Houston.

Of course, a lot of great bands don't come south at all. Atlanta is as low as they go.

If you would say that in the first place, I wouldn't even bother arguing.

I really hope that they don't count San Antonio and Laredo as surrounding cities...Ticketmaster does. Also, this website(pollstar) doesn't even list concerts in the Woodlands, Humble, or Katy as Houston concerts.

Heck, Ticketmaster doesn't even list Austin individually. It is one of San Antonio's surrounding areas.

And Houston STILL has more concerts scheduled within the next 60 days.

BTW, the DMB shot was funny...but, because I am a firm believer in to each his own music, I will resist finding out who your favorite acts are.

My entire post, boiled down to eight words taken out of context. You have no other response? I think I gave a reasonable amount of evidence to call into question both of your assertions that a) SXSW is a joke and b) that Houston has a greater variety of touring bands. I even said you were right about Tejano (shudder) and hip-hop!

    Oh well. :)

Curse no edit: I also want to add that the gazillions of bands I mentioned in my post *are not necessarily bands I give a crap about*, so therefore your theory about my argument being all 'bands dimsie wants to see' isn't right at all. You just took 'bands I want to see' out of my hundreds of words which argued much more broadly than that. I don't want to see Tony Joe White or Shelby Lynne or Branford Marsalis, really, unless I got free tickets. I was just trying to give examples of various musical genres with the artists I mentioned.

    OK, that's really all. :)

    Oh, I missed this. Sorry.

Tick 'include surrounding cities', and it will. I always do.

My favourite band ever is the Beatles, by the way. I'm boring and conventional.

Jebus, I hate the Beatles. How can you stand that horrific tripe?

When I was in 7th grade, I was "lucky" to go with the gay teacher on holiday to london and scotland and erf, manchester. We did get to see Sex Pistols stuff everywhere, and wonder, "Why is Hitler with the Queen?" and see a garbage strike up close (Yay!), but the downside was our intolerable bus driver (imagine a an old, limey v. of the Simpson's dude) force-feeding us horrible beatles wank for hours and hours and hours. "Love, love love". "Love, love, love". "love, love, love" (repeat) OK! I HATE YOU! BITE ME, BEATLE F&%! I will hate that grotesque tripe until the day I die. I can't imagine how anyone would assign that completely disposable offal any redeeming value.

    Thanks Crisco. :)

My imaginative friend, I might similarly ask you how you can stand the music in gay discos. Even on a *lot* of drugs, I'm still thinking 'if I was sober right now this sh!tty house music would suck enormous donkey balls'.

The Beatles. If you don't like them, you don't like them. But you're hugely and enormously wrong, on an epic cultural scale. So nyaaah. :p
