I find it amusing that gr8-1 is getting all defensive given the general attitude of Austinites.

I find it funny that you say this in a thread full of people b****ing about the lack of respect Houston gets.

Besides, at least Austin isn't full of fake, pretentious old-money people. :) dragp had the best quote of this thread:

For me, well I just feel more comfortable in Austin.

If everyone liked the same city, everyone would congregate in one place and screw it up. Comparing the movie theatres, restaurants, traffic, grocery scores (WTF?), or whatever else is silly. All that matters is where you like to be, and everyone likes different places. To say one city is better than another is ridiculous.

But Houstonites don't go on and on about how bad other cities suck like most Austinites do.

Right, fake, pretentious new-money people is a lot better.

Exactly. I mean, who would say "Dallas sucks ass" anyway?

    No, not at all:

I'm so fed up with everyone going on about how awesome Austin is. Don't get me wrong -- it's a great town, just somewhat overrated. It's the worst restaurant town I've ever lived in. That live-music-capital-of-the-world thing is so overhyped.

    ...

And Dallas, ugh. It's just another version of Houston, without the diversity and cosmopolitan flavor.

    ...

In conclusion, Austin is VERY overrated, and Houston does get a bad rap.

    ...

Also everything is so new and clean looking. Go to Chicago, NY, St. Louis and everything is so old and dirty.

    ...

Other than that, Houston runs the table over Austin.

    ...

In conclusion, in my experience, Austin is at the bottom of the list of towns I've lived in.

No, the Houstonians don't try to compare and bash other cities at all. Only Austinites think their city is best.

Right, fake, pretentious new-money people is a lot better.

Austin has less "money" than any of the other major cities in Texas. There was a 5-year reversal of that during the tech-boom, but that ended a while ago...

Exactly. I mean, who would say "Dallas sucks ass" anyway

See, the difference there is that whoever said that is just presenting facts.

What set Houston apart from the other Texas cities is that people are just plain nicer to each other. I can't stand the people that currently live in Austin. They cut you off when you signal to change lanes. They think there better than other people just because their husband or wife suckered some venture capitalist in giving them tons of money. The worst thing about Austinites is that they are just plain lazy which is why I live here:D

OK, I'll compare your few examples (which some were from non-Houstonians...you know where I live, right?) with the general sentiment among most of the people I came across in Austin. Austinites b**** more about Houston or Dallas than vice versa.

I was there for that and didn't like it. In fact, the four months I lived in Dallas, I've enjoyed this city more than I ever enjoyed the Austin aread in my 8 years there. Better clubs, restaurants, sports bars, much hotter women, and better grocery stores (unlike you, I like having a decent place close to me where I can buy food). Plus, I haven't been subjected to people at work or wherever tell me that Houston or Austin sucks whenever I say I'm from there or am going to visit there like I did numerous times whenever I lived in Austin.

Most everyone wants to think that there town is better, but I haven't seen it nearly as much from Houstonians or Dallasites as I have from Austinites, most of whom think Austin is heaven on Earth.

    Austin > Houston

    RM95,

How can you even be in this debate, did you ever live in Houston?

I think that Austin is a better & safer place to live.

Also, it has much cleaner air.

If you don't know about all the good restaraunts in Austin then you missed out.

Flemings, Sullivans, Fonde San Miguel, Gumbos, Mezzaluna, Austin Land and Cattle, tons & tons of eclectic places.

Of course Houston has more, but per capita, Austin has a better selection, and it is a far shorter drive to partake.

There is nothing wrong with Houston...don't get me started on Baytown though...UGH !!! (sorry Rocks2k, I left in 1985 and am never going back).

    :)

Houston is the best city to live in the whole world. Austin is a backward, little self-absorbed cowtown. Only backwater tidepool swimmers prefer that tiny edgepool to a real, international city with depth and currents and culture and industry. I can't believe anyone anywhere would ever want to claim community with Austin's dunderheaded population of whiners and loafs.

    No problem. :D

I like Austin, don't get me wrong. However, I just like Dallas and Houston better.

LOL, now that is comedy !!!!

Much better to live in a swamp with smoke stacks spewing tons of industrial waste into the air and having to be in traffic for an hour or more a day just to go 10 miles.

    Yep, Houston rocks !!

I like both Houston and Austin quite a lot. I prefer to live in Houston and visit Austin, though. The college kids EVERYWHERE get on my nerves. There's no doubt in my mind though that Austin's much cleaner and prettier. And the weather is way better there, too. It gets hotter than hell in Austin, but it's never as oppressive as the worst Houston days. Being that I'm vegan (no animal products in my food), I also much prefer Austin restaurants. There's no bar in Austin I like as much as Rudyards, though. What I really don't get is the props to Houston for the arts. How many of you actually attend the symphony or the ballet? As theater goes, the sort that I (and most other non-art dorks I know) appreciate also exists in Austin. The liberal thing is a definite Austin advantage, but seeing as how I never stray from my regular two or three hangouts, I don't notice much of a difference here.

    BJ,

The point of the thread was originally that Houston gets no props compared to Austin and Dallas. Clearly, Houston does get more props for restaurants, museums, ballet, opera, standard of living, industry, etc. That's why I said in post number two that SLA and others appear to be mixing up categorical props with the all-encompassing prop of saying which city is better overall.

Austin nauseates me. I cannot stand to be there for longer than a visit. The climate of personality and culture is way too homogenous for me. Relatively speaking, everyone does/likes the same thing, so the city caters to a narrow taste.

Since this has turned into the 'Houston v. Austin' thread, I just want to say that the music scene in Austin is *endlessly* better. Worthwhile bands and artists actually *come* to Austin (and occasionally Dallas). It was always like a miracle to Elvis and I if someone turned up in Houston too. The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Super Furry Animals, Primal Scream... I can't count the number of times we pulled all-nighters driving to Austin or Dallas and back again to see a band. Houston is only good for lame roots/rock music most of the time, especially when you compare its music scene to other cities' scenes.

(Of course, I'm currently living in a city which has even fewer worthwhile concerts than Houston, so... sigh. I should shut up. One week and six days until the Big Day Out 2003!)

Oh, and Waterloo Records rocks. Way better than Cactus or Soundwaves.

You clearly have not seen the Linus Pauling Quartet. Those guys (descended from Schlong Weasel) rock.
