11th or 12th isn't a complete diaster but it could have been 6th with a loss. Those 5 or 6 spots could end up being huge come April.
Maybe it has to do with the fact that unlike the NBA, most first round picks (especially top 10 picks) are going to be expected to be difference-makers regardless. Occasionally, there are years where the possibility of drafting a "once in a lifetime #1 player" is out there (and teams sort of do what you suggest), but it really hasn't happened since the Reggie Bush year, and we know how that turned out. Finally, the good players on "bad" teams are getting paid to play all the games. There's no playoffs for them, so why would they worried about "getting injured"? If that were the case, Calvin Johnson would play 12 games a year. They also owe it to the other teams in contention as the bad teams playing scrubs could definitely affect the playoff races (for instance, the Titans could have rested everybody today against the Colts, but that wouldn't have been fair to the Jags.... not that it mattered anyways).
Same could be said for the 49ers, Cowboys, and Lions. Why was it okay for them to win, but not for the Texans to win?
I'm sure some of those fanbases probably would have been okay with a lose too. Not complaining but just saying...
And I'm pretty sure that had the Texans lost today... at home to a Jags team playing without their starting QB AND starting RB... that more people would be b****ing about that rather than their worse draft position.
True... but people would be pointing out how our terrible defense turned him into that. Also, the only reason he got the ball so much was because they didn't have Garrard. Ultimately, our offense put up enough points that forced them to go away from the run... which led to Trent Edwards being Trent Edwards. Pretty sure Garrard would have found more holes in the defense.
The Seattle win has officially put the Texans at #11. http://nfl-facts-and-rumors.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22475988/26818691
But they didn't sit him to rest for the play-offs. One team was playing for a potential play-off spot, one wasn't. The New England excuse from last year doesn't hold water this time.
So any good CB/S/DT they can get at that spot? Thinking the kid from LSU will not be there at that time.
Well then those people are idiots if they take pleasure in the Texans winning a meaningless game and diminishing their chances of getting an impact player in the draft.
I don't think they took pleasure in the win... but you sure as hell would see b****ing with a loss. Moreso than the b****ing about losing draft position. That was my point.
Please. Losses at home to depleted teams tends to bring the masses out of the woodwork. Moreso than a poll before a game answered by few.
Imo, the Texans won this game as a way of saying F U, to everybody calling for Kube's head. We can't bet the Jags when it counts, but today we did and it cost us.
This is what we are pretty much all ignoring. Any team "fighting" for draft position would not have wanted a win either. We should not have expected everything to go perfectly for us. At this point, #11 is what it is, and we move forward.
If you guys don't mind indulging me in hypothetical situations, what would our position be had we lost today's game? I'm not sure how tie breakers work... does our strength of schedule a good thing or bad thing if another team has the same record as us?
If they lost and all the other games played out the same they'd be tied for 5th with Arizona and Cleveland. So 5-7, but they don't win many of the tie breakers so probably would've been 7.
