It doesn't doom him as a WR. I understand the pick, it's more about a scheme and fit then best player availiable. The Texans are a team that isn't rebuilding so they kind of have to make sure guys do what they want to do. This offense last year had no speed, nothing to scare teams and if he can do that then I think it'll work out for them. Doesn't have to catch every pass, but enough to take the top off the defense and be checked. I don't mind the pick but I'm partial to ever pick because it's near impossible predicting these things.
It's an everything thing. His hands are small and hard so he has to use his body to catch and has no confidence because of all that
I'm not calling him a bust just pointing out that the next 2 picks were better WR's than him. Maybe he learns how to catch the ball and lives up to the pick, but I don't think there's any chance at all that he ends up as the best or even second best WR in this class.
Point is that Brock can still find him in designed WR screens which can turn into big plays and that has nothing to do with Brock's poor deep ball capabilities. Can also find him on short crosses. Bottom line, speed doesn't me you run a 9 route every single time. Many ways to make big plays from the short passing game especially if you have speed. Also watch any Brock tape and you see he is very good at WR screen game.
Exactly what the Raiders said when they drafted Darrius Heyward-Bey over Crabtree, Harvin, and Maclin.
Throwing screens to guys who have to get the ball into their body and who are not shifty doesn't seem like a great idea
You don't draft player based on fit or scheme. You always draft talent, especially in the first round. This has BO'B written all over. He needs to just stick to coaching, he's awful at evaluating talent.
