"Honkie" is a term that Black people/African-Americans used toward white people. It was meant in an angry sense, or, at least, as a way of letting you know that the person speaking (black person) didn't like white people in general.

But it's an old-fashioned term, so most of us were simply surprised to see it. "Honkie?" What kind of textbooks are they using over in China's English-language courses? What sort of videos are supplementing the lessons? "Shaft"? Pam Grier films?

Offensive? No, you couldn't have offended anyone. Hell, the word made me smile, feeling nostalgic about the 1970's, when the term was popular (and apt to cause some offense at that time).

It's just not a word to use in serious speech. As I mentioned, "White" or "Caucasian" are the words to use.

Sorry to sound like a schoolteacher, which I am not.
