That is one thing I totally agree with. I hate-hate-hate all of those shows. Dan Patrick is a terrible interviewer and incredibly boring, Rome's style just screams immature jackass, and Cowherd's whiney voice makes my ears bleed. Simply terrible.
Funny you talk about how 790 is better than 610, but then only have a gripe with one show, lol. What about the other shows? Seems you enjoy them. Just a lil conflicting messages in your post. Trust me, if Rich never came back to the station I wouldn't be shedding any tears. As far as the 790 self-promotion, I understand the station ID stuff, but why are you doing a hardsell to me when I am already listening?
I will say that the hosts here are so reactionary and seem to say things just to get rise out of the callers. Now I would expect that these hosts would know more than the callers as sports is their life, but alot of the time they come off with some of the most ignorant statements ever. Heaven forbid a Houston team have a bad game, then the sky is suddenly falling and the 4 horsemen are on their way to town to serve death and destruction.
I used to be big on the late night ESPN Shows when they were on ESPN. All Night With Todd Wright is still a pretty damn good show, but I'm never up listening to the radio anymore at 3am. I'm loving the Rick Balou show. This really has nothing to do with the current topic...but Balou is pretty good
A couple of months ago, the Chronicle had an article on sports radio in Houston, and how the ratings were extremely poor for a city of our size. AM610 was barely a blip on the radar and 790 almost didn't register. Comparing these two stations to ESPN990 and the Ticket 1310 in Dallas, the quality of the local radio talent here is awful. There are some elements of the Ticket I dislike a lot, but I'd switch both of our stations with Dallas' in a minute. When 790 first started, Charlie said to be patient with them because they had big plans that would take time. To me, 790 should be on life support. Besides Charlie, it's a big boring zero. Overall, Houston sports radio is sorry unless the Rockets are in season. I'm listening to John and Lance right now and they are so pathetic, it's no wonder they can't build a larger audience. Chance, you guys need a major shakeup in your lineup. Ship some guys out and bring in some new blood. 610 is stale bread and the only thing in your favor is 790 is much worse. If Clear Channel ever decided to spend some coin and build 790 into a decent station, you guys are dead meat. If they don't, I suppose it's more of the same.
The self-promotion doesn't really bother me with regard to 790. Far as the shows go. I do listen when I can think to change it there at three for Charlie's show since he is by far the best. Other than that show theres nothing of quality to listen to. On 610 John and Lance are pretty good. Especially considering I have only a passing interest in the Astros and none whatsover in football. But they keep me listening. The only time I have to switch them off though is when John McClain is on there. Ugh. I don't listen to the Drive Time Players cause they blow my fun, seriously. Rich Lord sounds like a nice guy and has some alright takes. But Marc Vandermeer is aweful. If you're a Texans fan he may appeal to you since thats the only thing in Houston he has a sufficient take on. However dude only rinses and repeats what he reads on headlines with respect to everything else. He offers absolutely nothing on the Astros or the Rockets. I don't care for either when he drops a few weak quips here and there to add to horror. The easy way to solve the problem is replace Chance with Marc Vandermeer. The Night Shift is better. Matt Jackson is the Rocket man behind the mic on 610.
