there is certainly plenty of room to grow, which is what Ken Charles saw when he blew up KBME for the animal. What I think happened was he brought people from 96.5, 94.5, 101 (when it was english), and KODA over to the AM side. He cobranded 950 and 740 with 790 with promos and got people's interest in sports radio up. People then dug around the AM dial and found us and the numbers indicate that most people like us much better. That being said there is ALWAYS room to improve and we are trying. You can't please everyone all the time but you can please a lot of people a lot of the time. As far as Matt and Adam in drive time...they have a hell of a show and they work their arses off. Time will tell.
I'm going to go with the compliment sandwhich approach for 610. 1. Matt and Adam, from what I've heard when I'm coming home late from work, are pretty knowledgable, engaging, and entertaining. 2. I switch over to 790 at 2:00 pm on the button for a reason. 3. 610 has much better/less obnoxious commercials.
The Houston Press also mentions that the best radio host is Charlie Pallilo. The best radio host category out ranks the sports category. Best Radio Host Charlie Pallilo When it comes to sports knowledge, everyone in the city is sprinting for second place behind Charlie Pallilo. Much like his fellow sports junkies Marv Albert and Bob Costas, Pallilo is a graduate of Syracuse. It was the reading of Albert's book (the aptly titled Yesss!) at age 12 that convinced the young and future Orangeman to make a living talking sports until he was blue in the face. It was a fateful day in '89 that this sports animal migrated south from the big bad frozen tundra of New York State. "I admit that when I moved down here," Pallilo says, "the thought was a couple of years in Houston would help me along, and the next stop would be back in the Northeast. But the career went well, Houston is a terrific place to live, with tremendous diversity in almost all areas, and this is the place for me. Very few 75-degree January days in New York City." KJ works at the Post office right? He is funny, whenever the guys disagree with him, he bails out of his arguments. But I do like his calls.
yeah, that's him, pumping up the post office. I was with him at a remote when he had a smack off with craig from the southeast side.
You make my point, which is 610 lives on only because they have no real competition. Even with Pallilo, 790 is sorry. I read an article in the Chronicle a few weeks ago explaining that the ratings for sportsradio in Houston are a fraction (like 1/3 or 1/4) of what it was for other major cities, Dallas included. They had no explanation why. I maintain the reason is because the choices are so bad. Another possible reason is because people in Houston aren't as much into sports as other large cities.
True...but popularity means ratings which means money...a radio station's only means of survival is money from popularity, so no matter how "retarted" the show may be if it gets ratings it's staying. Bingo...Houston has nowhere near the hardcore sports base that other cities have. I'd say that ratings probably go up temporarily when the Astros get in the playoffs, and would if the Texans ever got in the playoffs...but these moderate fans aren't as interested during the long season. As for me, I like Matt Jackson the most. Unfortunately I get to hear him the least because I'm rarely around a radio when he's on. John and Lance are okay...I just can't stand when John interviews guys asking pointless questions. Rich Lord is very mediocre to me...I liked Vandermeer his first year with the Texans and when he started out here, but ever since he teamed up with Lord I've liked him less and less.
If Matt & Adam were on during drive time, 610 would see a huge spike in ratings as I know I wouldn't leave 610 during my drive home. I'm rather lucky in that aspect though as I usually don't leave work until about 5:45 or 6:00 so I hear Matt and Adam most of my time in the car anyway... but I listen to 790 stream during normal drive time and would stream 610 if it was Matt and Adam.
Did anyone just catch Vandermeer talking about the site, and then he made the comment "yeah and they love me". Nice to know he has read this thread.
None of them are local, that's really the problem I have with them, because they come across as disinterested in Houston sports, and are merely 'doing their job'. This is precisely why I would much rather listen to MattJ on the night shift. I also don't mind John and Lance during Rockets season, they are actually pretty entertaining.
