I'm sorry, but the fact that Houston's list of supporters includes so many widow/widowers from the Columbia mission solidifies it for me. These people have sacrificed SO much for the space program, and they want the shuttle to come back to Mission Control. To me, I don't even understand how this is a debate. Houston, Florida, and California are the only states that have played an absolute integral part in this country's space history, therefore they should be the three states that get the shuttles (the Smithsonian notwithstanding).
I haven't been out there in about 10 years so this... ...is now enclosed? When I was a little kid you could actually climb on it and pull parts off of it -- zero security.
JSC has had the lion's share in NASA's space flight programs. Other than KSC and JPL, all other centers have gotten token work and jobs. These same jobs would have been much more efficient had they been done at JSC but NASA didn't wanna piss the other centers off too much. But now with Constellation program gone, JSC has nothing but the MCC infrastructure (i.e. Building 30M). The little work that there is left to do with respect to manned spaceflight is all split to non-JSC centers. The fact that Houston may not get a Shuttle will be icing on the cake to the other centers. JPL seems to be the only center that doesn't (or will ever) get affected since they work with unmanned space flight projects. Just my 2 cents.
Well, we should know for sure by this time tomorrow. Sheila Jackson Lee seems to think we have a good chance, but Eric Berger (Sci-Guy) doesn't share her optimism. If I were a betting man, I would go with Berger. Hope I'm wrong....
No kidding. How in the world could Houston not get a shuttle? I'll be super-pissed if this doesn't happen.
If we don't get one, it'll be a sad time indeed...for all the history and honestly, one of the things we are known for, to now have one would be a diservice to all those that are apart of the program today...
Interesting article here http://www.thespacereview.com/article/1817/1 Has a small poll from fans and where they think the shuttles will go.
Here's hoping Houston doesn't get the big bone job tomorrow, but I'm not optmistic. It seems so extremely logical that there is no way they'd pick it.
Eh, everyone knew Florida would get one. They deserve one just as much as we do. Ditto for the Smithsonian. And California can have the Enterprise, it never even went into space. So it really comes down to who deserves one more - Houston (home of Mission Control, first word said from the moon, home of most astronauts and families), or Dayton, Ohio (home of....well, it's a battleground state.......)
There should really be some sort of petition started to get one here. I was reading that Ohio, Seattle, and New York are in the running to get one. How is that even possible?
