In the middle of 2010, Forbes ranked Austin as the "best big city for jobs." San Antonio checked in at #2, and Houston was #3.
Austin is a better place to visit (by far), but I much preferred living in Houston. As strange as it is to say, I never found any restaurants I really liked in Austin (except for Franklin BBQ - but that only popped up once I left!). I had been to all the big ones people always suggest and was never impressed. That being said, if someone was coming to Texas and could only visit one city, I'd recommend Austin.
I'm aware of this, too. I can't fathom how it's true, but I'm aware of it. Umm....Salt Lick? It's not really in Austin, but it's close enough. And it is awesome. I love Austin. I'm from Houston but went to HS in San Marcos, so Austin has been like a second home for many years now. That said, Houston is a pretty cool place to live, especially as an adult. Austin gets points for its quirks, cool factor, and the Hill Country. Houston gets points for food, diversity, and size = stuff to do. It's a draw for me. I love both cities.
lol coming from the guy who automatically thought I couldn't be white if I was getting a jaywalking ticket and it had to be cops hassling the minority. But seriously do you know the demographics of Houston and Austin?
i refuse to believe that austin is a better city to find a job then houston... it literally bottles my mind. i know next to no one that has taken a good job in austin and those that did had intense competition. young folks, otoh, are literally flocking to houston in droves, and that's even with a sluggish energy sector. austin may be a better city to get a job for young folks, but there is absolutely no way it is a better place to find a job. save for perhaps the technology sector, a qualified applicant will find more good jobs in houston in one day then they would in month in austin.
Why, in god's name, did someone bump this thread? If you want to find a thread about Austin, find one of the sane threads without that ignorant kid, Mummywrap, or start a new one. This thread SUCKS.
Of course they are. Houston is the 4th largest city and Austin is around 16th-ish. Austin just happens to be the smallest and least racially diverse city I've ever lived in (Houston, Austin, Toronto, Chicago).
Which is why about 25.6% of the AISD kids in Austin are white. I know, because I have one kid who graduated from the district that's now out of state at a university, and another in her freshman year in high school. Why don't we not go there, OK? If anyone wishes to babble and rage, or simply discuss, the various racial differences and racism in Houston and Austin, and the history of racism in Houston and Austin, they can start a thread about the subject amongst the monkeys in D&D. Thanks in advance.
7.8% of HISD are white. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houston_Independent_School_District What's unique about Austin is the segregation. Houston's more geographically mixed. In Austin, not so much.
no zoning in Houston. you got projects next to good neighborhoods. look at fondren southwest. not trying to fuel this city war thing, but i grew up in houston and i know alot of friend's families move to nicer parts of houston because of lack of zoning. i wouldn't say Austin is segregated, the yuppies are moving to the east side.
So you're saying that other cities zone minorities to various parts of town? very weak reply from you. I'm not impressed, and may NEG REP you.
ha texx, i'm just telling my experience and it is true people in houston who can afford to move to a better neighborhood because their property value is going down in their current one move. i still don't even know what this thread is about, if someone has the freedom to move to any city they want that's their choice. we know you dislike austin and the university of texas. people live in cities for many reasons, so your point or mine might not even change their minds. ut chicks > rice chicks
