I don't hate Austin but Highland Mall is THE WORST MALL I have ever been to. I've been to my fair share of Houston's lower tier malls, such as Northwest, Sharpstown, Almeda, even Town and Country Mall back when it was on its last legs was better than Highland Mall. That mall would be better off closing, the food "court" is an abomination to food courts everywhere. but I digress... The Galleria >>>>>>> Barton Creek Mall
Im a fan of the Houston Rockets, what because I choose to live in Austin and not enjoy living in city with over 2 million people where a close drive equals anything less than hour, I should leave. Austin is a great city with many things to offer other a mall, I didnt know people still go to those...But did you notice that no one was being kicked out of the stores in the video? Did you notice hordes of people running around and making it "rain" from the balconies? I dont go to malls but once to twice a year, but if i walked into the scene in that video I would turn right around and go somewhere else. And im a mut before you call me some white kkk advocate. You continue to ignore the business argument people made about closing down during Texas Relays... You want me to leave clutchfans because I voted for Austin? Sounds like your trying to begin a segregation process of your own. We get it...Austin isnt your thing, get over it, there is racism everywhere...if you havent learned that I highly doubt you are a black person and that anyone ever called u the "n" word.
The people who built the galleria built an outdoor galleria here in bee caves. Dude you should have gone to greenspoint, westwood and meyerland back in the day. Oh and gulf point. Traffic at the Houston galleria sucks.
We get to attend Houston Rockets & Texans games --> We win The business opportunities are greater in Houston. Our housing market is solid..high-rises, townhomes, etc all over the place. Living in the galleria, midtown or washington area is ideal for young adults but we also have great suburbs like Sugarland & Katy. .
I live in Austin, have season tickets for the Texans and go to about half of the Rockets home games. Best of both worlds.
No one was being kicked out? They were pulling down the gates while there was potential customers walking right outside. Is there a way a business can say "Your not welcome here" in an any more direct manner? Hordes of people running around? Uh no. They were walking. Oh here we go!!!!!!!!!!! "The making it rain argument!!!!!!!!!!!!! So making it rain is grounds for shutting down a mall? LMAO! Why would you run away from that scene? It was people walking around a mall having a good time. No one was causing any trouble, unless you think "making it rain" is a crime. I didn't call you a kkk advocate. I didn't ignore the business argument, I told Major that I would take his word for it as far as 6th st. goes. But there was still no excuse for the mall closing. The only segregation process I would try to start is racists vs non racists. Your right, Austin isn't my thing and you get it. I also get that there are a lot of Austinites that think their city is superior, throughout the years, I've got that too! It's like every few months, Austinites need to "prove themselves" or something. I'm not going away and if I feel a certain way about your little city, your going to have to deal with it the same way I've had to deal with Austinites talking crap about my city for years, so you get over it.
You dun goofed up Mummy Face it, your arguments on why Austin sucks applies everywhere, including Houston. Your claims on segregation is ridiculous as well.
"Mostly Eastern part of town that is very segregated from the rest in terms of race and class..." Can you take a wild guess on who wrote the above statement. YOU DID. You are also another "they made it rain so shut down the mall" advocates. When did Houston close down an entire mall because there were too many minorities there? Face it, in terms of segregation and racism, and while they are present in every city, Austin is on a whole other level.
Nope, I-35 doesn't run through Houston. I hear what your saying, there is segregation everywhere on many different levels. The level of Austin's segregation is the problem. Only 8.2% of Austin's population is African American and most live in one section of the city. Houston's African American population is 24.1% and while there are sections of Houston that are primarily inhabited by Blacks, the African American population in Houston is pretty much all over the city. From Spring to Greenspoint to Acres Homes to Houston's Northside etc... And that's just one minority group!!! Houston has a larger percentage of Asians, Blacks, Hispanics, Africans, Indians. Again, not number, but percentage. Why is this? Is it just because, or is it that these people tend to feel more welcome in Houston. Or is it that they just know that Houston is a better place to live, the second answer ends this thread immediately, the first gives reasons as to why the second is true.
Nice one sherlock, I was mentioning the fact that your claim is ridiculous because Houston is segregated too. Every city is. Dallas, LA, NYC.
Houston is segregated, but with it's black population at 25%, it's going to be a little difficult to reach Austin's segregation championships.
LOL Houston has a bigger job market, simply due to geography and other reasons. People move there to support their family, they don't move there because they "feel more welcome" or feel threatened by "racist white" people like Austinites. Oh by the way, talking about segregation.. http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/housing/housing_patterns/pdf/censr-3.pdf Using all five indexes, the most segregated large areas include four of the same five metro areas, with SanFrancisco at number one and San Jose moving into the top five and Houston at number six, basically tied with San Jose and LosAngeles. Figure 4-3 shows the settlement pattern of Asians and Pacific Islanders in 2000 in San Francisco. the five most segregated metropolitan areas for Hispanics in 2000 were, in order, New York, Providence-Fall River-Warwick, Phoenix-Mesa, Los Angeles-Long Beach, and Chicago and Newark (tied). The top ten were rounded out by Denver, Riverside-San Bernardino and Houston (tied), and five others that were roughly tied for tenth. Figure 6-3 presents the settlement patterns for Hispanics in New York in 2000.
wait...you really don't think a minority family would feel more comfortable in Houston than Austin? And are you really saying that Austin housing isn't racially segregated? nomc I'm enjoying living in Austin, but Houston is way more minority-friendly than Austin. I don't really see how that's debatable.
I didn't say that, I'm just trying to show the real reason for Houston's higher minority population. I am from Houston and I am a minority, I would know and I agree, it's more friendly. I'm not saying ATX isn't segregated, I'm saying that using that as an excuse to say Austin sucks is stupid considering Houston's segregation as well.
That's funny, now I got you talking up Houston, thanks. Yes, we know our job market craps all over yours. Uh, hate to break it to you, your little 10 yr old stats are seriously flawed. Dude your fist quote is how bad Pacific Islanders are segregated. Pacific Islanders make up less than .1% of both Austin's and Houston's population. Nice trying to pass that section off as segregation in general, but you were busted. Oh, and then you quote about the segregation of Hispanics. Um, you do know that there are almost as many Hispanics as there are white people in Houston right? Kind of hard to segregate 42% of your population. LMAO! Couldn't find anything on African American segregation could ya? Sorry bout that.
Lol you have no idea what you're arguing about. Stats don't lie. Oh by the way, Austin's economy is actually one of the better ones out there too, maybe not as equal as Houston's since Houston is a bigger city. Some studies have Austin as a better market right now http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/career-articles-top_cities_for_jobs_in_2010-1081 http://www.theroot.com/blogs/recession/forty-cities-not-bad-rest-country http://www.forbes.com/2009/06/09/recession-economy-cities-business-beltway-recovery-cities.html http://www.forbes.com/2009/06/09/re...business-beltway-recovery-cities_slide_2.html ROFL, learn to read kid, it says Asian as well.
Houston's segregation COULDN'T even be on Austin's level even if it wanted too. The sheer number of minorities here are too many. The mix of people here is too great to have a segregation problem anywhere near Austin's. What my argument boils down to is that I prefer the people of Houston MUCH more compared to the people of Austin and I've given my reasons. Just because you don't like the reasons, don't try to distort the truth and make false claims and assumptions.
