Uh yeah bro, Houton does have everything Austin does. That's unless you think we "shut down" all of our parks due to minorities visiting and we made new laws forbidding outdoor scenary and activities. I didn't say Houston's live music scene was as big as Austin's, but we do have live music here. Do you see the pattern? We have everything here in Houston that you have in Austin. But, we have things, such as the Houston Rockets, that Austin does not. Don't agree? Name what Austin has that Houston don't and I'll name what we have that Austin doesn't.
You might be able to find some things from long ago, or a few racist problems here and there, but you won't see our Malls closing down because of a large presence of a certain ethnic group.
Really? Because I seem to recall Austinites even saying Austin is segregated. And the main person I was having a discussion with, backtracked bigtime of his false statements. Have a nice day. Oh, by the way, since I got "destroyed" here's a little gift for you. I can't take credit because this was posted by another member who felt the same way on the old forum... Texas Relays Open for Business!!! Texas Relays Closed for Business!!!!
You never agreed with the argument? You didn't ask for stats for proof? You may not have said them first and you may not have said them, but you sure did believe in that little theory.
Your a good friend of closet racism aren't you? You assumed The Texas Relays caused businesses to close due to a higher crime rate. Why did you asssume this? Just in case you didn't know, you were wrong about that assumption, but you know what they say...
I'm trying to be respectful, but you are just becoming an absurdity. You're talking to someone who remembers Blacks riding in the back of Houston's buses, Whites Only signs on the city pools and the bathrooms, and getting pulled over for nothing by the Houston police, which was headed by Chief Herman Short, an actual member of the KKK. Give me a ****ing break, kid.
I'm being respectful aswell. It's not absurd to see something racist and point it out. Everything you listed, was nationwide at the time. My point is very clear. Racism at this time should not be tolerated under any circumstances and I prefer the city I live in to be segregated and to not have these tendencies. YOU may not think Highland Mall shutting down being a big deal, but thousands of black people did.
No, you are not being respectful. You are derailing a thread in Hangout with continuing posts about "racism" in Austin, while making the absurd claim that it just ain't the same in good old Houston. It is. You go on, in reply to my post, to say that what I described "was nationwide at the time." It was not. I lived it. You're hung up over an act of stupidity by a few people that was condemned here in Austin at the time. With that tar brush, you attempt to smear a great city. Try growing up. It'll be good for you.
Derailing? This is another infamous Houston Vs Austin threads is it not? I simply stated that Austin is segregated and is racist. Uh, several have agreed with me on the segregation and some have asked why I think Austin is a racist city. I explained. You can agree or disagree, I don't care. So, your saying racism wasn't rampant throughout the 1960's? Oh my, I just don't know what to say about that without being disrespectful as my grandfather had to endure racism on a daily basis at that time. A few people don't shut down an entire mall and other businesses also. Not one Austinite here has condemned this as of yet. Just excuses and racist assumptions that the crime rate must have increased. That tells me a lot right there. It's not a tar brush, Austin is pretty damned segregated and what happened during the Texas Relays did happen. I'm not ignoring those issues and with those issues, it doesn't make it such a great city to me for obvious reasons.
Good god almighty. Am I attempting to converse with a ten year old? Have you no ability to read? I'm serious. Did you even make an effort to read my posts? What you said was the complete opposite of what I posted. "I grew up in Houston, lived there many years, and moved to Austin in 1980. While there is much I miss about living in Houston, I wouldn't consider moving back. Austin has changed amazingly since I began coming here in the 1960's, and in the main it's not for the better, but Austin still a much groovier place to live, in my opinion. And it ain't flat. I'm not sure what the racism crap's all about. Hell, I saw more racism in Houston then I've ever seen here." ............... "I'm trying to be respectful, but you are just becoming an absurdity. You're talking to someone who remembers Blacks riding in the back of Houston's buses, Whites Only signs on the city pools and the bathrooms, and getting pulled over for nothing by the Houston police, which was headed by Chief Herman Short, an actual member of the KKK. Give me a ****ing break, kid." I'll add something else, which you should know, but are clearly oblivious of. There is a forum on this BBS that Clutch created specifically to put crap like you're spewing separate from Hangout. It is known as D&D, which stands for debate and discussion. You should fit right in there, as you have no idea how to have a debate or a discussion. Stop posting you stupid political crap in this forum. Please.
A ten year old wouldn't try to deny that racism wasn't a problem nationwide in the 1960's. You- You go on, in reply to my post, to say that what I described "was nationwide at the time." It was not What did you describe? You- You're talking to someone who remembers Blacks riding in the back of Houston's buses, Whites Only signs on the city pools and the bathrooms, and getting pulled over for nothing by the Houston police, which was headed by Chief Herman Short, an actual member of the KKK. Give me a ****ing break, kid Uh, those were common events when? In the 1960's!!! When was Short Chief of police? In the....1960's!!!!! You threatened to make a list of racism in Houston, I said, go ahead but try to make it recent. You post 50 year old racism from the 60's. Nice. Looks like I called your bluff and you had nothing. I'm not going to stop posting my "crap" because It's what I believe makes Austin a crap place to live. I've been a member here for many years and although I don't post much, I've read MANY posts from people talking crap about my city and I just always let it go. It's not going to happen anymore. I'm proud of my city and if I felt unwelcome in Austin when I was there for my personal reasons, there's nothing your going to be able to say that's going to change that. Houston is far superior, Austin is an insignificant wanna be big city that shuts down when big city things happen in it.
Uh, your the one who believes that there wasn't widespread racism in the 1960's. According to you, it wasn't only prevalent in Houston.
Round 2: Malls safe for black people Austin: ????? not Highland Mall, that's fo sho! Houston: Gunspoint, Northline, Sharpstown (oops they are now PlazAmericas......nervermind) Winner: Houston Score: tied up at 1-1
