Would you say the same thing if a homeowner pummeled a guy who was trying to fleeing after robbing his house, and he continued to try to get away. Besides, for all we know TMac went fetal after only one punch. Business owners pretty much have the same rights.
I personally think that once you secure your property, you should hand it over to the police. I know others think differently but that is where I draw the line. Now if these guys harmed my family in any way, I probably would be smashing them with a baseball bat.
We didn't see them do anything excessive, though? The were trying to secure the robbers for the police. The guys at the car were not giving up. They were trying to get away. They could have quit. What did you see that was excessive force beyond what was necessary to detain the kindred?
