    Finch AND Joerger?!?!?!

The Rockets' coaching staff will be like the NBA D-League Hall of Fame!

Players and coaches win games. What this move tells me is that we've entered Tank Mode for next season and will probably move some of our key veteran players for picks and/or young talent with "potential." That will make some here happy. Stock up on Dramamine. The spin is going to be insane.

I just talked to the Big Guy. He said to let Deckard know, He did offer help...it was called Rick Adelman. He also said he thinks Tron is pretty dorky.

all of this is in jest of course...at this point, i really don't care.

Ehh.. I don't know about that. I would not have thought of him; but people REALLY under-estimate the importance of the assistant coaching staff. Look at the Lakers, Rockets (last year), Boston, San Antonio, Cavs (with Brown) and the Mavericks..... all these teams have the best assistant coaches, and head coaches that are far more hands off. In the modern NBA, head coaches are more like managers in baseball; they set the direction, handle ego's, talk to the media... etc.

The good thing about this is that the Rockets are facing reality. They have a good team, but they have to address fundamental problems in terms of their rotation.

The team as it is currently build has legitimate playoff aspirations and solid 2nd round potential... And Rick Adelman is perfect for aiming at those odds... But this isn't the NCAA tournament where any dog can have it's day... This is the NBA where a series mean that 99 percent of the time the better team won...

Morey want's to set a championship roster, and he needs everyone on board. And this includes especially the coach... You can't have coach who visibly mocks the players brought in by the GM... Rick mocking Morey's acquisitions was not good (T. Williams and Thabeet). If anything it might affect trade values Morey is trying to set... Hype up a player, coach him up, integrate him, etc. it could all be a motive of Morey to begin with. Adelman was only the head coach - in this day and age when coaches have gotten used to doing the personnel movement (Adelman questioned the hierarchy). I think Morey was always open for Adelman to give suggestions, but Morey probably saw that Ademan wasn't willing to listen to Morey's suggestions.

Being a Hall of Fame coach like Rick Adelman, wasn't conducive to the hierarchy. Adelman got the most out of his players. But that's dreaming small potatoes. Morey wants to go for the fences, or go down trying.

McHale and Finch should hopefully be a good combination.

Thanks, Max. Tell the Big Fella that I have to agree with him on both counts.

It's all about the roster. Coaching can only get you so far.

We need to upgrade the roster or put ourselves in a better position to do so.

Hmmm from JVG to RA to KMcHale...

I've got some GOOD news and some BAD news,
The good news is that JVG is no longer the coach.
The bad news is that JVG is no longer the coach.

Actually, this will be a long rebuilding process until we win our next championship.

Or at least until we can draft someone as good as Kevin Durant.

NBA is totally a players league- just look how Miami got back to the finals.

Especially when that subsequent job is lost to the guy that fired you in your last coaching gig.

On assistants, probably don't need to look beyond the list of interviewees for head coach. What other opportunity have they had to interview assistants?

That's been my feeling too. Hiring McHale means a rebuild.

Can someone tell me who David Joerger is and why he's so coveted? Is he like a defensive specialist? I've never heard of this guy, and the Rockets want him on the coaching staff.

Anywho, I can't say I'm satisfied with the hiring, but I'll at least give him a full season before judging him. At least, the coaching speculations will be put to rest.

Last I checked, the team as it is currently built didn't even make the playoffs.

Maybe Morey is more serious than I give him credit for about developing Thabeet.

Or we stay roughly the same, which is probably most likely.

Gregarious, affable, and apparently never at a loss for (meaningless) words... sort of makes him the anti-Adelman. Also reminds me of a story...

Back in the late 50s when the New York (football) Giants were dominating the NFL it was said that the strategy for success was as follows:

    -Tom Landry handles the defense
    -Vince Lombardi handles the offense
-Jim Lee Howell (head coach) handles the New York Times.

So maybe Jim Lee McHale will meet with a measure of success with a dynamite staff. Certainly not on his own Xs and Os.

I think you hit the nail on the head. This is a serious rebuilding effort now, no screwing around with 40 win teams. Buckle up kids, its going to be a bumpy ride!

The Rocket's interviewed as many or more black candidates, as white candidates. The other major finalist, Casey, is also black. Further, Don Cheney was a Rockets head coach and was black.

I don't think the Rockets are racist.
