Just got back and had a great time. Stage 2 had gotten pretty badly off schedule (I think they were about 1.5 hrs behind) which meant that Elaine Greer had to compete with a much louder band over on Stage 1. She still sounded good, as did Wild Moccasins and Ume. The lines weren't nearly as bad today (in fact, I never saw much of a line at all) so either they fixed the problem or people stayed home (due to rain or previous day burnout). Of course, I was on the guest list, so I wouldn't have had to wait in line anyways. I really hope they keep doing this and that people attend (shame on those who snuck in - I don't care what you think of the promoter, your actions will make it harder for this to happen again. A pox on your household).
I only made it out today for a few hours, but I did see The Eastern Sea, Wild Moccasins, and Prince Paul. I really enjoyed the latter two and my friends in the Moccasins did a wonderful job. Prince Paul provided a pretty good party atmosphere which is all I could ask for. I think the lines did not exist today because the green two-day wristband just let you through automatically. People were probably in line yesterday waiting to get that thing. I got there at the beginning yesterday to support local Houston artists, so I didn't experience the line problems with people showing up for the larger names. I agree with the pox on people who snuck in. I want things like this in Houston and people that sneak in are going out of their way to make sure it doesn't. Andrew Lee of the Wild Moccasins told me that it cost near $80,000 to book Of Montreal alone, so imagine the costs of coordinating the entire thing. I hope this grows and becomes a mainstay on the tour schedule.
You're welcome for the recommendation, even if you didn't read the recommendation Dang, I would have dropped by with my son to say whats up. The little dude kept me over by the blow up water slide most of the afternoon.
some mobile uploads from today: this guy was on a different spiritual plane then most everyone else (read: heavy hallucinogens) voxtrox from a distance prince paul the slide free dead kittens Clutch... so good to see him support the scene wild moccassins tossing water balloons
yea.....he was on somethin. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bVDRwXay03c&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bVDRwXay03c&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
I saw the guy several times. As I was leaving around 4, I thought I saw him singing lead on the 2nd stage with Hearts of Animals.
oh god o montreal was so awful , i just had to walk out in the middle, wasnt expecting them to be that awful. should've gotten airborne toxic event instead or something, man they were awful. only good thing was all the hot chicks lol . anyone try going swimming by the swings on the corner? pretty epic
Yeah, he was on stage but the band was the Southern Backtones. Why was the 2nd stage so off schedule? I enjoyed both days but the free "water" being vitamin water annoyed the hell out of me.
Fun weekend overall. Sure there were some hiccups, but that's expected for a first go round. Overall, all the bands played great. The sound was solid all around. To the guy that said Octopus Project's sound was off, you're nuts. Not sure what show you were watching but all the bands sounded great. Day 1 BSS put on a mediocre show at best, not digging the new tunes at all. The Sword killed it. Hadn't seen those guys in a while. Slayed. Not a fan of Explosions in the Sky, but I have to admit, watching them live was pretty surreal. I was able to stand on stage during their set. Pretty nice to see all those people going nuts during their sets. Enjoyed it. Day 2 Ume was freaking great, as always. Lauren has to be one of the most talented guitarists to come out of Houston. So sweet and pretty, but rocks out so hard. Love those guys. Don't get what was so great about Voxtrot. Caught one song and headed over to the 2nd stage. Devin the Dude was pretty awesome. I liked how you could tell immediately it was him. When he got there, he was rolling 15 deep. Of Montreal put on a good show, visually. Haven't really heard much since The Sunlandic Twins, so I really wasn't familiar with the mojority of their songs. Visually it was impressive, but other than that, it was "meh". Great weekend overall. Had a blast. Not too much to complain about. Keep in mind this was their first time doing this. Hopefully, there's another one next year. I'm sure that'll run more smoothly.
Oh, and how could I forget Buxton. Local act with possibly the biggest draw. Those guys never disappoint. By the way, I heard that the kid running around was not on drugs. Odd fellow, if so.
Sadly I didn't get to punch a hipster in the face, and I had to leave early and miss Devin the Dude. Sad times. I think Octopus Project was my favorite.
Wow. I'm actually really mad at myself for not knowing Devin the Dude was performing. He puts on a great, great show and actually sounds great live, which never happens in rap.
The highlights for me were definitely Devin the Dude and Explosions in the Sky. Broken Social Scene was pretty good, I'd never heard of them before. Of Montreal were not my thing. There were a bunch of local bands that I wanted to see, but I'm just too old to hang out in the heat all day. When things cooled off, it was great. Wanted to see the Hates, B L A C K I E, HISD, and others. Luckily, I'll have more chances soon. The Will Call line looked to be a huge cluster****, but I bought a tickets both days and waltzed right in without waiting. With a little strategy, I bought beer without waiting, too. You just had to "shop around" a bit. All in all, it sure looked like a great success. Lots of people showed up, the beer guys were running out on day one, I think all the sponsors got their money's worth. To the guy whining about not liking the organizers, they stepped up and put something together when everyone else was content to sit around b****ing about how much cooler Austin is. The Free Press people deserve a high ****ing five for busting their ass to make something happen for us to enjoy.
I got to see B L A C K I E and was supremely disappointed. I skipped over from Fat Tony, since we're buds and I've seen him countless timessince he started performing, hoping to see what the hype was. Unfortunately, I thought it was awful and by the time I walked back to Stage One, Fat Tony was already finished.
buxton was great, even tho it took them damn near forever to get the sound up and running. real alt country/rock sound that my friend and i both dug
That was not the best environment to see B L A C K I E. Don't base your opinion on that one show, I'd give it another chance. Much better performer than that show indicated, that's for sure.
I walked over with my 5yr old when The Hates were playing and he got one of their stickers. Father of the year, right here! What can I say...I had no idea who they were at the time! As for their music, not really my thing, but it you like punk you'd have dug it. Austin is still miles ahead when it comes to the music scene, but I was very happy to see something like this come together in Houston. Hopefully it will continue and will grow.
