take water... and sun screen. the aug 8th and 9th average high is 94°F.... the all time highs are 102°F (1947), and 105°F (1962).
I don't care about their music, as I'm not really into the Indie scene. But it seems to be a common denominator these days....bands just choose names that are 2 or 3 random words plugged together. I think they do the random name generator on rock band until they get one they like.... Seriously.... What Made Milwaukee Famous Octopus Project Young Mammals Sideshow Tamps Grandfather Child Hearts of Animals Grrrl Parts (The worst of them all) American Fangs Muhammidali Come See My Dead Person These all just reek of gheyness. Just terrible. I'm pretty sure I could go to the rockband random name generator, and get about 5 of those. Only I would pass them up because they were bad. I have to apologize to everyone in this thread though, because I'm doing one of those "I have no clue what I'm talking about, but I'll bash the thread anyways" dick moves...
Holy ****, Houston finally landed some bands that only pretentious douches know of! I'm going to put a ****ing beret on and bring some pabst blue ribbon.
Voxtrot is a great band. I think they are working on their second album right now. In 2007, I saw Voxtrot perform live about 5 times in 6 months. The lead singer, Ramesh, is a really nice guy. They were the feature band of SXSW in 2007 as well. I think a few of their members are from Houston, because they always make a stop on their national tours here.
They reformed almost as soon as they brook up. Nick, the upright bassist (who was playing with them in '99) formed a group called the Umbrella Man with Robert (accordian player). They play at the Continental Club a lot. When Los Skarnales broke up initially, Ryan the keyboard player put a group together to play the gigs Skarnales was still booked to do. He continued the group along with Beans (the drummer) and Jeremy (briefly the guitar player). They're called Ryan Scroggins and the Trenchtown Texans. They're playing the festival too. Felipe, the singer, formed a group with Jose (guitar) called Felipe Galvan y sus Carnales. But all they did was play Skarnales songs and people got confused so he just went back to calling it Los Skarnales. When I was doing club gigs and playing in ska bands, I did a bunch of shows with Los Skarnales. We even shared members. I know a bunch of the guys who used to be in there and even did a tour with the Trenchtown Texans last summer. The thing about that band is that it was real resistant to change. For a band that's been around as long as them, they have very little material. They put a record out on Megalith and it's mostly the same stuff they've been playing for 10 years. Other guys would write new music or want to try new things and Felipe just wouldn't do it. That's one of the reasons the band broke up and why the spinoff groups started gigging almost immediately, because they already had full sets worth of new music that Skarnales wouldn't play.
i coulda sworn last time i talked to nick it was at least three years that they had broken up and this was at least 2 years ago, the few times i seen'em they had a lot of energy and there music was cool
Never heard of any of these bands because I'm not a big indie music kind of guy, but I would LOVE to see Explosions in the Sky. I have all their CDs and listen to them on a daily basis. First discovered them when I saw Friday Night Lights many years ago. Man, it's too bad Ten Hands doesn't tour anymore. They used to blow the doors off any festival they played. And yes, it's going to be a mosquito infested oven in August. Not sure what they were thinking there. Why not have it in October?
Explosions in the Sky at dusk is going to be effing insane and cathartic. That Octopus Project/Broken Social Scene/Explosions lineup Saturday night is set up so perfectly. If you're going to go to one day, go Saturday.
