and this is what happens with a 6 round single elimination tournament designed to make it as easy as possible for underdog teams to move on. you get 2 mediocre teams battling mediocre-ly for the national title and putting on an embarrassing display. i'd love to see something like the top 16 teams (decide however you'd like), 4 week tournament, best of 3 each round. but alas, that'll never happen as the current structure is far too ingrained in our culture and draws even casual fans in at a rate that i'm sure the bean counters love.
Just back from game: -Crowd was a good 60% half-interested locals, but overall it was 75-80% Butler crowd there. -UConn's support just blows. They PADDED the student section with random off the street types and STILL it was a third empty. The Alumni sections were deadbeats until the end up 10 when it was clear they won. This was Tampa Bay Rays support. -Holy god that was terrible basketball. That wasn't defense. VCU brought the best defense of the Final Four. This was Butler just trainwrecking at the worst time and UConn somehow winning despite two straight games of C- play. -As Butler clanged their way with that 0-8 stretch, it turned into a real jeerfest in the crowd. I will say, you never want to see someone win or lose like that. Off to bed.
UConns support is very bad. They gave their student tickets to U of H and Rice athletes so they could fill their section.
I was at the game so I didn't get to hear Charles comment after the game. Say anything great? I'm hoping he ripped on both teams...
That was one of the worst basketball games I have ever been to in my life, and that includes my 15 year old female cousin's high school games. But hey, at least I can say that I've been to a National Championship game...... BTW, UConn should be ashamed of their crowd. What a pitiful display of fandom.
Pretty much my thoughts as well. Glad I went...still would have gone if I knew the game would be that bad. I just wanted to experience a championship game.
This is why college athletics has no appeal to me. It is an inferior product. Sort of like watching the WNBA.
I DVR'ed the game and after the first 5 minutes or so just deleted it after remembering that I didn't care about either school. As much as everyone hates the BCS, at least you are rarely stuck with a game like this for the championship. No matter how you feel about either school, you have to admit that a Duke/Kansas type final would have been much more fun - and better for our city. When does football season start again? Also, March Madness just isn't the same without Phi Slamma Jamma. Every year is just another reminder that those days are most likely gone forever.
Skip Bayless said it best(yes Skip) it is exciting seeing all these upsets in the 1st few rounds until you get to the Final Four
