you must have not been around during the Rockets back to back championship runs, the fans were just as crazy or more crazy for the Rockets.

but the baseball stadium holds about 30,000 more fans than the summit did so of course it will seem much louder.

CLUTCH CITY RETURNS UR A MORONNNN!!!
dude are u serious? is this thread even serious! i love the rockets, cry when the lose the playoffs. but being from houston I am A HOUSTON FAN. and i love the stros just as much as the rox. In case you didnt notice we are in the NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES, and we are one , i repeat ONE game away from going to the WS! of course there is no coverage on the rockets right now. last time i checked, the freaking season hasnt even started. if you ever say that the Astros are not helping the Rockets media cause, i will personally see that you are physically removed from the city of Houston and never allowed to attend another Htown sporting event again. you make me sick and you are a terrible fan for this town.

Uhmmmm I just figure Houston is still a city filled with "Good ol' American boys" who would prefer to watch baseball and football before a sport like basketball. I couldn't care a bit if the Astros lost three straight or won the world series. But I'm sure there are people who definitely want to see that happen and since this is the playoffs it will be all over the news. The city is also filled with alot of bandwagoners. When the Rockets were winning people were nuts about them and you couldn't stop hearing about them on the radio. Even during preseason. After a while we just didn't hear a single thing about them. When we reach the western conference finals a different group of fans will be there. For the city of Houston, any sort of success on any sport is something to be proud of though and if the Rockets were winning the way the Astros are, I would assume we would also get the coverage. If we don't then we can go out there and complain but 'til then there is not much to say.

No ballpark sells out every night. This is not a 16,000 person basketball arena. This is a baseball stadium. Get the difference?
The Astros ranked 10th this year in overall attendance, but rank 7th if you rank by percentage of overall capacity. We filled up 84% of Minute Maid seats every game. This pretty awesome in my book.

first of all, I'm sure if the lower seats are $35.00 or so and seats are generally around $5.00 to $35.00, filling up most of the TC is not much of a problem even if there are 40k seats.

I really can't see many sports fans wish that one team will die just so the other would garner attention. How selfish is that?!? The Astros needs to lose so that people will be interested in the one team that you are? The Rockets are getting jipped because the Astros are winning?! I doubt the Astros would care less if the Rockets made it to the finals. Think of it this way, if the Rockets made the finals, it'll be quite a bit into the Astros REGULAR SEASON!!! Then again, you see Roger Clemens getting front row seats to cheer on the Rockets.

I'm a Houston's Sports fan. I love my pro teams in Houston, even the Texans to an extent. I just love sports in general and I root for the home team. The Astros are making history with storylines enough to fill any sports website or station. They got people stepping up, hall of famers that are well past their prime, and pitchers who came HOME to do whatever they can to take them to the fall classic! How can any true Houstonian root against them. Actually, scratch that... how can any true Houstonian root against them JUST BECAUSE they're taking attention from the Rockets. They represent us as a city. Anyone else heard during the Spurs game on how T-Mac wanted to get back to be at MMP for Game 4?? These teams support each other. And personally, I support these teams through every nail-biting experience.

Preseason (a few critiques, every mistake goes to the = "eh, it's only a preseason game" section)

Regular Season (You see what teams are made of and start to make complaints and ask for the heads of Head Coaches, and in the case of Football, the entire team and its organization)

Post Season (Fans go wild, whatever the sport. Houston sports fans go nuts and get into it better than any crowd I've ever heard, every call against us gets us riled up.)

Then there's where the Astros are now.... they've fought tooth and nail to get to the postseason and are now 1 game away from the WS!!! This is history in the making if they can pull it off. If the Rockets aren't jealous and are rooting for the Astros, what makes you think that it's necessary to root against the Astros because of the attention it takes away from the Rockets?

This is nuts!!! I can't believe some people are rooting for the Astros failure because they are taking attention away from the Rockets PRESEASON. Don't worry, the Rockets are going to get theirs this year. Imagine what a year this will be for Houston sports. Astros win the World Series, Rockets win the NBA Finals, Texans get the first pick in the draft. Looks like this is going to be one hell of a ride for Houston sports fans.

    Yeah ok ;)

It's pretty unbelievable how many of you take it so personally that I'm not passionate about a Houston team that plays a sport I couldn't care less about. I never thought I'd see the day that people on the biggest Rocket message board in the world would be insulting my intelligence because of my love for the Rockets. So much unnecessary hostility in this thread. I mean, most of us live in Houston so at least have the decency to insult me to my face first :D

    Let's review:

I am obsessed with the Rockets.
    I can't stand baseball.

Why is this a problem, exactly?

I'm not even 100% serious about it, as some of you obviously are. If I could choose for the Astros to win the World Series, of course I would. Championships in any sport will naturally benefit the fan support for other sports. I just can't stand baseball and absolutely love basketball so I figured it'd be nice if the Astros could miss the playoffs altogether and the media could shift their focus to the greatest sport on earth. Selfish? If you want to overreact and make this sound like a soap opera then yes you could call it that. It's not as if I had a button that said "Press To Make Astros Lose The NLCS" that I would press it. People shouldn't be so enraged by the fact that this has crossed my mind...damn :p

Your tendency to be a fair-weather fan cannot be any better established by your quote of "If I could choose for the Astros to win the World Series, of course I would."

    Weak. Carry on.

Most all of the tickets sold in the lower bowl at the Rockets are bought by corporations and professionals who use them to entertain their clients. It wouldn't project the image of professional competence for either to be the Face-paint guy.

    sad but true

On the flip side, I really hate it when I go to an Astro's playoff game and I have Batty Bob slapping the thundersticks in my ear for 5 hours.

Not really as to the media rushing to baseball. I'm guessing that your "beef" with the Astros making splashes is because you miss hearing about how T-Mac is scoring 21 pts in a preseason game? Or maybe you miss having 10 fans calling talking about the Rockets?

Yet, it's ok and "good" that the Astros misses the playoffs in a year where the team came back with so much heart to only get so close, meanwhile, breaking the hearts of Astros Sport Fans and basically push them towards rebuilding mode in the near future.

Here's 1 thing that entered my mind when it comes to this. I could not imagine if I have a child and he goes to school saying how he hopes the Astros would lose because "daddy" wants them to not make the playoffs. That's just speculation but see how that could hurt the people around you?

I guess you're entitled to your opinion, but to seriously bring this up to a bbs as a "Houstonian" hoping for their own teams to lose, that's actually a little low. It's find that you don't care about baseball, as much as I don't care about other things. But to root against them is definitely something else

    NBA > MLB

Im happy the Astros are that close to the World Series. Defintely watch some the games. However, the 18th inning marathon, I only flipped the channels randomly from watching football. I'd fall flat asleep like the kids the showed in the ballpark if I were there.

When the Rockets played Overtime in the Playoffs, I was on edge every play.

I disagree that the Rockets have always played second fiddle to the other teams in the city. During the championship years, it was all Rockets all the time. The Astros weren't great at the time and the Oilers were on their way out. The Rox were the kings of the city. They fell on some hard times and the Astros started winning the division and getting into the playoffs regularly. I promise that the Rockets will be getting their share of attention this season. With as bad as the Texans are, we'll need something to turn our attention to once the Astros are done. Anyone that wishes the Astros weren't in the playoffs so that the Rockets could get preseason coverage is nothing short of an idiot.

    GO ASTROS!

    GO ROCKETS!

Most people (especially in Texas) are going to like football and baseball more than basketball. That's one reason that I like basketball more. :)

Well seeing how before last year the Astros had never made it TO the NLCS let along be one game away from winning the NL penant there really is no question as to why. I have followed both the Astros and Rockets for more then 20 years (since moving to Houston) and I was a fanatic when the Rockets were winning their first (and second) championship and have been the same way with the Astros. During the regular season most houston fans are fair weather but once the playoffs roll around everything changes. Die hards like me just take it to another level.....lol

I will be flipping back and forth between both the Astros game and the Rockets game tonight but will spend most of my time watching the Astros knock off the St. Louis Cardinals and win their first ever National League Penant and first ever visit to the October Classic!!!

    GO ASTROS!!!!

Actually, the Astros were in the NLCS in 1980 and 1986. You were right on everything else.

He was also wrong about the fact they have never been within one win of winning the NL pennant. In 1980 they were one win away (shoot, they were a couple of innings away with Ryan on the mound).
