Exactly! I can't wait for the Rox season to get started because it's gonna be a great year. But right now it's all Astros! This city is riding the midnight express to the Fall Classic, and I'm loving every minute of it. This is how it SHOULD be. One team pushing for the World Series, another team gearing up for a title run, and another steamroling to the Super Bowl.... well, 2 out of 3 ain't bad. :D

I'm a Houston Sports fan and I know where my priorities are. If the Astros are one game from the World Series while the Rockets are 3 games into their preseason I'm not going to hope for a loss so I can get some classic NBA pre season coverage.

I just don't understand why some have no clue why the Astros are getting so much press. If you claim to be a Houston sports fan (or just a sports fan in general) and you are mad about the Astros taking the spotlight away from the Rockets presason game because they are one game away from the world series, then I think you need to turn in your Houston sports fan ID card.

I think the Rockets have more "true" fans than the astros. I think the astros have more fair weather fans and fans who just like to party. Also, the astros have all the women fans who really don't even like sports, but think the players are "cute" or whatever. So they root for the team.

I can't tell you how many people I know who just want the astros to win so that they can go out drinking and find a party. They aren't even baseball fans.

Come November I am ALL about the Rockets....but in October.....ah man...1 win away from the first world series...I have been rooting for the Astros and Rockets for more than 30 years....

To get to a World Series...with Biggio still playing, and Bags playing DH....that would be SUPER special.

    GO HOUSTON !!

Except the Texans...I can't get into them like the Oilers.

    :)

Wow, I've met some Rockets and Texans fans like that too. You know, if you don't like the weather in Houston, just wait five minutes and it will change. Or was that Cincinnati.....Portland.....Atlanta....?

I think some people here are misunderstanding the thread title. I don't think the thread starter is talking about right now specifically. I think he means overall. Of course people are going to be more excited about the Astros being a game away from the WS vs. the Rockets preseason. I don't think anyone has a problem with that.

I do think the Rockets have always been 3rd fiddle in Houston behind the Astros and the Texans/Oilers. It's always been like that with the exception of the 2 championship seasons. I don't know why that is.

I've always thought there are 3 different types of clientels for our 3 sports teams.

    -Astros = family crowds
    -Texans/Oilers = wild crowd
    -Rockets = corporate crowd

The reason why the TC is so quiet is because the tickets are so expensive. The real fans like us are priced out and the stands are filled with the corporate bigwigs who got the tickets from their boss, show up mid-1st period, sit on their hands, then leave mid-4th period.

This is not a new phenomenon.

dude, as a kid, the first sport you usually play with your dad is baseball. Before you can shoot a basket or throw a spiral, you can throw a ball and catch it. I think baseball is the ultimate family game - mostly because it's something young children really relate to....so I won't start comparing fans.

No way...unless by "elsewhere" you mean China or something. In Houston, there are a lot more Astros fans than Rockets fans. Do you think that if the Rox had a 40,000 seat stadium that they'd fill it up or at least average 34,049 as the Astros did?

I care about the Astros and Rockets equally.......love em both...

The Oilers were my number one team for years....now, it is the Stros and the Rocks...

    But preseason vs. postseason...come on?

Umm, so you never see 5 yr olds playing basketball or football? I see it all the time. It just depends on what the dad likes most. If the father is a diehard football fan, you'd be damn sure that his 5 yr old son has played with a small football with his dad, and probably knows the names of the top QBs in the country.

Basketball is a distant third place in the Houston sports scene. Football and baseball are much more popular. I'd say that equation holds in most of the cities around the US. Baseball might actually be the most popular sport in places like St. Louis, NYC and Boston.

Baseball is more friendly to the pocket book of the average fan. The crazy fans, who are there during the regular season (not the folks who leave after the 7th inning) but their cheer infects the lackluster fans during the playoffs. Basketball, on the other hand, isn't so kind to the wallet.

Most crazy fans don't go because ticket prices for regular games are more expensive. It's cheaper to go to the Fox Grill, or any other sports bar for that matter, than it is to go to a game. As a result there are more diehard fans in the sports bars going crazy and more corporate/business/lack luster fans in the Toyota Center because they can be-not because they really want to be there.

Its always been my impression that the Rockets receive the least "love" of the fans when it comes to the three major sports...The Rockets are just now starting to win their core fan base back and I think in a few more years we'll see this city support their Rockets to the fullest now that the team has an identity and style of play that the fans can support...

Its not that big of a stretch to say that on the national level... the country has the NFL and MLB way up there... and the NBA falls somewhere in between College Football and College Basketball.

The Larry/Magic/Michael years brought the NBA to a solid 3rd, and probably 2nd around the baseball strike... but the interest has unfortunately dwindled every year since 98 (Jordan's last).

It will likely make a comeback (these things are always cyclical)... but for now, the NBA has an image problem, a network TV problem, and a fan-base problem that precludes it from being as popular as it once was. (all in all, though, i'm still expecting/looking forward to big things from the Rockets this year).
