What kind of discrimination do they share? Being gay has to do with your sexuality, you're either a man or a woman, but like to have sex with the same gender. Being transgendered has to do with either not being totally male or female, or being unsure of your gender, or claiming some other sort of gender (granted, I don't know a lot about transgendered people). To me, it seems like things like marriage and political protection are gay issues. I don't really know what transgendered issues there are, but I don't think they fit into those issues the same way gays do.
