All it takes is the right coach to clean up a top tier but struggling P5 program. What was Michigan doing before Harbaugh? Herman could be that guy if he wants the challenge. Conversely, if UH hires the wrong guy again like Levine, they could plummet back to irrelevancy no matter how easy their schedule is.
You are correct that there are no guarantees. For all we know Herman could get hit for violations or his team could start to struggle on the field and future job openings evaporate. However, with the type of personality he has, I don't think he questions his future success. There will always be openings, the question is whether he would be in a position to get the jobs if he choose to leave.
Herman is already very familiar with the University of Texas program (he was an assistant) and the politics involved and booster involvement. He has actually discussed his disdain for the power of boosters and the politics involved at programs he has been at in the past (Ohio State/UT) at UH get togethers. Herman may leave Houston, and it may be for UT.... but the job (while very good) isn't as perfect as some think. Herman and any other coach that is approached by UT is going to be well aware of the comments made by the top tier boosters at the time Strong was hired, and the pressure the administration has received from zealous boosters. Not to mention how UT has handled the situation up to and through the report of the firing today. Someone will take a deep breathe (like they do with Notre Dame) and take the job....... it just may not be the first choice of the AD and/or the boosters.
Possibly, although Herman left money on the table from UH last year. He was set to meet with and negotiate with TF and took the first offer from TF and made no counter demands other than to increase the budget of his assistants and to pour more booster money into the program that was ear marked for an extension. Also, if UT or LSU or another top tier program wants Herman, money won't be a major issue as they will pay if they really want him. He seems to be very much a "fit" type of coach, that fit may be at UH or UT or maybe another job that none of us are thinking of (the closest he has come to moving on was the USC job).
How do you know that was FT's first and only offer? You rarely hear of specific counter demands during extension talks, almost never if they're going well. All of that comes during the "working on" part with the agent and FT. Herman wasn't stepping into the office to negotiate anything. The deal was already negotiated to their liking and all he needed to so was sign. I'm not saying Herman is gone or anything. But yes it is a perfectly sound business decision to get the best deal you can get and shop it. If you don't like what you see, then you can always go back.
That was the exact offer Tillman said he was going to make at the Regent's meeting. He made it, and Tom accepted, with only 2 conditions. 1) 200K of the salary offer be given to his assistants 2) They break ground on a new practice facility within 2 years
It does make you wonder why woman get so offended if you take their offer and then try to shop. It's just basic business and common sense.
Guys, Regents approve deals, not offers. It's the same process at every school and when have you ever heard a school publicly and officially say here's what we're gonna offer him, let's hope he takes it! It's the same reason why you never hear about Regents rejecting a deal. All of this was negotiated behind closed doors and unofficially approved before anything was presented to them Not saying he didn't negotiate extra benefits to his staff and other things but to say he cared more so much about his staff that he left money on the table by jumping on whatever TF offered him is a little naive.

I have posted about it in the past. A quite overview is: I am not a graduate from the University of Houston and did not have any loyalty to the university growing up. My feelings for the football program have grown based on the people that I know in the top of the administration, including someone that I became very good friends with when they were in the administration at Northwestern when I was in graduate school. They were hired at the University of Houston in the administration office a few years later, and have a say in the football program and expansion of the school. Couple that with having an uncle-in-law that is a prominent booster (where access is historically easy for boosters) and I have had more knowledge about how the school has been operated and the vision it has. As a result I have become a fan of the school and have especially become a big believer in the vision of the administration and a huge believer in Tom Herman as a football coach. No, the contact between FT (who does what he wants at UH) and Herman leading up to the contract extension was minimal and negotiations were in their infancy. Herman made it clear that he did not want to spend much time dealing with his contract at the time. The basic frame work is supposedly similar to Herman's prior contract. Both FT and Herman wanted to speak face to face to discuss the specific terms of the contract. TF expected there to be more back and forth but Herman agreed to the contract offered with few changes and did not ask or seek out more money beyond the initial offer proposed. Indeed some of the money that was anticipated to go towards the contract for Herman was (at Herman's request) forwarded to the assistants and more was donated to the football program. Now I am not saying that Tom Herman is a saint or that he would never leave the University of Houston. He has in the past said that he weighs the loyalty to his players, the university and his family interest with the ability to win. Herman has said very little negative, other than when the fans did not show up like he had hoped and made it very clear that it wouldn't work if the fan support wasn't there. For all I know, Herman could leave in January. However, I do know that TF has made another contract offer to Tom Herman, and the discussions had started prior to the Big XII announcement. I firmly believe that where ever Tom Herman ends up, he is going to be an extremely successful coach. I have been fortunate to have meet him socially a few times and have had basic conversations with him. He is a very impressive person. If he left the University of Houston tomorrow I would still pull for him and have a very strong opinion of him. I can tell you that the administration and those that have day to day dealings with Herman all believe that he is special and bound to be extremely successful. What Herman has done at UH is wrestle a level of control over the program, and influence that goes beyond what he is likely to get at another program. Herman has a say that few coaches have. If Herman ends up at UT, you will be very lucky and likely will have a long term elite program. He is the real deal.
I am sorry, but you are respectfully wrong. He asked for additional money for his staff and he got it. Other money that was available for the contract was given to the school and football program. There was a real concern at the time that getting a contract done with Herman would be difficult, even though Herman told them he didn't want it to be a distraction and would happen in due time. Does that mean that will be the case this time? No, I don't know if he is going to UT or staying at UH.
I can literally link you to the transcript and video where Tilman seeks, and is granted, approval from the BOR to offer Tom Herman a contract worth $3MM
Yes I'm sure you can, but that doesn't mean that the $3M wasn't already negotiated and agreed upon. So if Herman said no thanks I want more, Tilman would have to seek and get approval for every subsequent offer made during their negotiation? Do you have any idea how time consuming that would be and how public the negotiations would get? And this is not a knock on anyone by any means at all.
I don't think you are trying to knock anyone, just are just mistaken. Tilman is the head of the board of regents. He does what he wants mostly because it is his money. He doesn't have to run to the board constantly for approval. He has their backing without much question. Renu and Tilman and Duarte are on the same wave link, Tilman and Duarte are bankrolling the program for the most part. They all get along well and they have it all laid out.
Not surprised at all. TF is a huge believer in Tom Herman and is very dedicated to the football program. He has a worth of 3 billion dollars and is obsessed with getting UH into a major conference and fielding a top program. He was willing to go well beyond the amount of the last Herman contract.
Great post. I didn't mean to come off as Herman and TF had every detail ironed out prior to. And the negotiations could've been as simple as "How about we double your salary?" "Yes that sounds good thanks." But I dont believe the amount wasn't already agreed before he went to the BOR even if he is the head. He knew what Herman would accept and thats what he presented. You don't present something otherwise, especially since like you said, it's pretty much his money otherwise. But all in all, it really doesn't matter, both sides got what they want.
