what's up with the shocker as their hand signal? Does that stand for something other than, you know....2in...1 in....thing? What I'm asking, is what does it stand for for UH?

Here's the story I got at orientation and the one in the UH handbook.

The cougar sign, made by folding in the ring finger of the hand towards the palm, has several stories explaining its meaning. The true story of its origin, however, dates back to 1953, the first time UH played the University of Texas in football. Since this was their first meeting, members of Alpha Phi Omega, the service fraternity in charge of taking care of Shasta I, the university's mascot, brought her to the game. During the trip, Shasta's front paw was caught in the car door and one toe was cut off. At the game, members of the opposing team discovered what had happened and began taunting UH players by holding up their hands with the ring finger bent, saying UH's mascot was an invalid and so were our players. Texas went on to win this game 28-7. UH students were very upset by this and began using the sign as notice that they would never let UT forget the incident. Fifteen years later, at their second meeting, the UH Cougars, proudly holding up the now adopted symbol of UH pride, fought Texas to a 20-20

UH did not play Texas again for eight years, our first year as members of the Southwest Conference. The Cougars were on a mission, and in front of 77,809 spectators (at that time the largest crowd ever in attendance at Memorial Stadium) slammed the lid on the disgrace Texas had attempted to put upon UH 23 years earlier. The final score was the University of Houston Cougars, 30, the Texas Longhorns, 0.

Its like they are cursed. Right when you think there back, they lose to a team like South Alabama and Virginia Commonwealth. They live and die by the 3 and have no inside presence.

Great story. UT and the Aggies kept UH out of the Southwest Conference for decades, and when we finally got in, we kicked some serious ass, at least in football. I'm so glad the program hired Penders. Finally, they are moving in the right direction.

My family has been associated with the University of Houston since, literally, WWII. I used to run around the old temporary buildings as a kid. They had these long waxed wooden hallways. I'd get up a head of steam and go sliding down the darn things. I've seen a photo of an 8 to 10 foot rattlesnake that was killed right outside the entrance to one. (I'm not kidding! If anything, it was bigger than I remember. In the photo, 3 students and faculty were holding the damn thing, with several others standing around with their mouths hanging open, or a grin on their faces. Maybe some faculty member fed the thing steroids and it escaped from a lab! ) Those buildings were left at the University from WWII. Man, there is some serious history most people don't know about UH.

And hell... they can't win them all!
    GO COOGS!!!
