I got my season tickets already, ready to go to every game. Two years ago, UH showed alot of promise, last year they fell off a bit. But with this schedule this year, I am thinking they should be on the upswing. Even if not, I am not going to abandon the team. It is alot of fun out there and the tickets are reasonably priced. But until they start winning consistently, I can't expect the masses to start caring about the program.
They built a new baseball stadium, but what else have they done? The Ferrell Center has been there since the late 80's and Floyd Casey is the worst football stadium imaginable. There is absolutely no question that Ann Richards pushed Baylor through into the Big 12. They stick out like a sore thumb when you consider they are the only private school and have no success in money making sports. They are good at the fringe sports (womens BB, track, tennis), I'll give them that, and they had a nice run in baseball this year. That said, they are an embarrassment in football and basketball, well we won't even go there. Baylor won't even be allowed to play non-conference games in mens basketball this year.
Even though it's not related to them spending money after they were invited to the Big XII, the Ferrell Center is still one of the nicest basketball arenas in the conference. They have added state of the art sound systems and scoreboards to Floyd Casey Stadium as well as a new $2 million dollar locker room facility which is the largest in the country. They also added luxury suites and new press boxes since entering the Big XII. Sure, they're the bottom of the Big XII when it comes to football and basketball. However, just a few years ago, you could say the same thing about Kansas in football. Now, they've been mentioned by some to have a chance of winning the Big XII North this year. While the South is far superior to the North, I think Baylor has finally decided to give a good coach more than just a couple of years to turn it around. I'm not sure I'd call women's college basketball any more a fringe sport than men's college baseball either.
Baylor's women basketball wasn't that bad. They won it all. Are you talking about Kansas Jayhawks? Man, anybody can win the North. I can win in the big XII north.
Baylor getting into the Big XII was laughably simple, conspiracy theories aside. Texas=Austin Texas A&M=College Station Texas Tech=Lubbock Baylor=Waco The 4 left out? U of H = Houston Rice = Houston TCU = Dallas/Ft. Worth SMU = Dallas/Ft. Worth Essentially, the cities with professional sports are notorious for lackluster fan bases with their college teams. Towns where college is King moved in to the Big XII.
Ah, yes. Everything is falling right into place, just as expected. Get ready for an upset. You heard it here first.
Ann Richards and Bob Bullock forced Baylor into the Big 12. The story goes the SWC and Big 8 TV deals were about to expire. ABC could only offer 1 conference. Adding UT and A&M would make the Big 8 package more attractive. ABC then approached the Big 8 about adding two more schools for a football championship game (more money). Richards and Bullock would not let UT and A&M leave without taking Baylor. That left the only remaining stable program Texas Tech to get the last invite. Hence you have the Big 12.
