Sam might be a good pickup. I'm guessing he tanked last year, and could perhaps return to his 2003-2004 form with the Rockets. After all, he will be in his contract year.

Spree completely put his foot in his mouth with that "feed his family" comment. His value has taken a gigantic tumble. Maybe he can can get a deal similar to Damon's or maybe not. But I wouldn't say that signing him for the LLE is completely farfetched.

I say bring in GP to start and at the same time teach Luther Head how to be a back court thug.

I hear the league will push the date to invoke the Amnesty clause up to about mid August. If that is the case - we could know if Finley, Anderson, Houston, or the like will be casualties within 2 weeks.

I really do not see it dragging into training camp (October 1st or 2nd) or even past August at worst mid September.

i have a feeling about earl watson. he'd more likely take that LLE and look for an extension after that. He basically made, what, 1.6M last year with the Griz, right? So 1.8M wouldn't be an insult to him, plus, he's young enough and smart enough of a defender to pick up the JVG way.

all that aside, i'd still like to see j-will here to get some strength back, backing up sura/james/head and eventually battling head for the starter's spot in 2 years.

Arkoe, reread the post. The answer is no on both counts. We only have two 2s (Wesley and an unsigned Barry).

We also have 2 1/2s (Sura and James) and two washed up 1s (Mooch and Ward).

The only legit 2/3 we have is TMac, but he is most productive at and prefers the three slot.

We need a Desmond Mason, or as Willis25 said, a Gerald Wallace type. Again see link to post and thread above.

I love Sam Cassell, but he's turning 36 in November. If we do go after him, we won't be giving up anything of value. Troy Hudson on the other hand...

I'm guessing the guy we'll be looking at now is Jaric.

We don't need a Desmond Mason or Gerald Wallace type, IMHO. We need guys who can handle the ball and shoot the three. When our perimeter players aren't hitting their three pointers, the offense gets real ugly, real fast. Sure, it's nice to have guys that can slash to the basket, but if they can't hit perimeter jumpers, our offense just won't click. Trust me on this.

Also, people talk about how we traded for Wesley because JJ was too slow and we wanted to move T-Mac to the three to improve our overall perimeter quickness. What some of us forget is that the move was also made to add a better ballhandler to the team. IIRC, the Wesley deal happened at about the same time Sura went down with a knee or back injury early after just coming off the DL.

I think we do need guys like Mason/Wallace. If for nothing else, to add some depth and versatility to the lineup. T-mac is literally the only guy on the team that can defend those big SG/quick SF type swingmen.

I could possibly see a deal of Wesley for Gerald Wallace snt for 3 years 15 million. The Bobcats would get a veteran SG and be able to preserve their cap room next year because Wesley will be a free agent. And the Rox could plug Wallace into their 2/3 rotation. Re-sign Barry so we would have a 1/2 rotation of James, Head, Sura and Barry.

That would give us a decent rotation as we go into the season to look for a trade for our expiring contracts.

    Smeggy,
Watson is unrestricted so Memphis does not have a say.

Can Jason Williams play the 2? He seems like he has the height and ball handling skills. If so he could fix both our back court trouble. Even though i really don't see much need for a superstar PG. Sura and James seems to get the job done.

So is the whole thing with the European point guard over? Can we not bring him over?

White Chocolate barely touches 6'1, on a good day. Of course, the same can be said for David Wesley, but Wesley's built like a tank, and he's a better defender and shooter.

Do you think Wallace could start here though? I have nothing against GW, but he's always had the ability to play defense and rebound, and yet he could never crack the rotation in Sacramento. I always heard that he lacked both the skills and the understanding to perform in Sacto's precision offense. My understanding is that he's not a very good ballhandler despite an incredibly quick first step, and that his shooting is, at best, inconsistent(his shooting %s suggest that it's horrendous).

I just personally feel that we need guys who, when left open, will hit their jumpers. And I don't think Gerald Wallace can do that. Desmond Mason is a slightly different story with me, because I love his attitude and I think he'd make a fantastic sixth man, but again, he can't hit the three. At all. And I think that would be a problem for us, especially out of a player in the starting lineup.

All I'm saying is that while everyone's fallen in love with athleticism, a lot of people on this board seem to have forgotten that last year our offense was at its best when our guys were keeping the turnovers down, hitting open jumpers, and making the extra pass. Everyone wants to focus on the reasons why we lost last year, and I think that's caused some people to forget why we won so many games last year. Just my opinion.

    Interesting if true.

Looks as if Jason Williams is gone but I think he is going to Boston. Memphis is trying (supposedly) to get Paul Pierce out of Boston so we will see about that little .500 remark :)

Erm, this comment should have been directed my way. Can Wallace start for us? Probably not until he improves his perimeter shooting. But would he be a great option off the bench? Certainly. His career fg% is .446 which is excellent for a guard, which means that at least he mostly takes shots that he can make. He's active on defense and absolutely fills the stat sheets. He can rebound, gets steals and blocks.

Whether we like it or not, the games against the Mavs did expose something. The rockets need a lot more depth, athleticism and versatility if they want to contend. If we can grab a young, active, athlete for our bench then we should. We need to be adding pieces to our roster, and a guy like Wallace would be a nice piece. And if he can go "bobby simmons" on us and develop a jump shot, then all the better.

Jaric is a restricted FA and his agent is shopping him around for 5m. No way Jaric plays for us.

Yeah, when the team was knocking down their perimeter shots we were awesome but there were too many games when the perimeter game wasn't there and we looked awful. SA has two guards that are better creators than outside shooters and they haven't done too badly.

Our best chance to pick up somebody will be from amnesty. These guys will be collecting big paychecks from their former teams and it would be a money hungry mofo that wouldn't pass on the MLE minus LLE difference to play in a good situation like Houston.
