Oh, I know. I was just speaking in general. I think the reason I get so annoyed at most people who are so anti-PCBS is because they end up whining about it more than the people who were originally offended. This thread is a perfect example of that.
It is ridiculous because it is political correctness taken to the extreme. The team in is Houston, Texas, United States of America and it is OUR histroy. If the logo with Sam Houston really pisses them off, why aren't they boycotting the big ass statue in Huntsville? or the statue of him on a horse downtown? or basically anything else that has to do with the Texas revolution? Wouldn't those also be reminders of how they got their asses handed to them? As mentioned before, weren't there mexican's that were fighting for Texas Independence? The fact of the matter is, this is just a stupid publicity stunt and a senseless reason for people to b****. The idea of them changing the name pisses me off but the unabashed abuse of political correctness is probably what is really getting me riled up. It's a waste of time and a facet of our society that really irritates me. Everyone should be conscience of other people and their feelings but they should also be tolerant as well.
Hey, I for one am glad they aren't about the horse downtown or anything with Sam Houston, etc. Again, I'm don't agree with the whole thing, but I can understand that point of view. I don't understand, though, how people are getting so pissed and b****ing about history and heritage - when the people they are b****ing about are pissed about the exact same thing. Not too mention it's for a team that barely exists and had a name for all of a week. But folks are pitchfork-and-torches mad up in here. That's strange to me. And I would offer that the game of soccer has much stronger ties wiith things/people that are definitely not Houston and Texas. It seems stupid to me to take a chance in pissing off the people who could possibly make up the large chunk of your fan base. But then again, it also seems stupid to me to price your games right out of people's consideration before you even take the field, so what do I know.
You make a good point but I think it is attributed to the pride of being a Texan. I think that Texan pride is unmatched in the US and possibly beyond. I think this b****ing about changing the 1836 name feels like it is a slap in the face to this pride and some people take it personally. As I said earlier, I think my reaction is a bit of Texan pride and my extreme dislike of political correctness. I also have a tendency to blow things out of my ass and then later chill out about it. I agree with the ticket prices. They are ridiculous. You might not be too far off. I have nothing to do at work so I might as well b**** about something
No, I have. Sorry to annoy you Rocketman although since you bolded most I guess you can say you were not talking about me.
I would argue that the pride Latin/Hispanic people feel for their heritage and culture is just as powerful as Texan pride, both in this country and around the world. Not too mention it has a much, much larger scope. Hell, 'Texan' pride is partially based in hispanic culture (cowboys and such). That doesn't make either side anymore right, of course. But to me both sides are b****ing about the exact same thing. But I can definitely understand the whole fed up with PC thing. However, in this very thread where this kind of thing is being argued, someone made a joke with the term 'wetback' in it, and no one so much as batted an eyelash. That's a shame; and until stuff like that goes away (which is probably never), PC will exist, as much as most of us despise it.
How on earth do you know? Do you have secret webcams installed on everyone's monitor that reads the ClutchBBS? Personally, I thought it was distasteful and unfunny but I wasn't going to waste Clutch's bandwidth b****ing about it. My assumption was there were others who felt the same way.
You're kidding, right? People on messageboards (and this one in particular) will post if they think someone was wrong when they said Queen Latifah was ugly. I hope your assumption was right, but I believe sadly that it is wrong.
I figure that most people figured it was better to not dignify stupid posts like that with a response. Typically, it is what they are looking for so why satisfy that. Unfortunately, I agree with you that there will always be stupid people.
I didn't see that and going back I don't see it now (I didn't read every message just searched each page for "wet" or "wetback"). Hopefully a mod has deleted it. *Edit* I guess that's why I didn't find it. I didn't think much of it since it's just a rip off of a Carlos Mencea joke. My opinion is a city/state/country shouldn't have to disregard their history to not offend somebody. Espsecially history that involved a group of people revolting against their own country to gain freedom.
One problem is that people in general have lost their sense of humor. There are lot more problems in the world than a freaking name of a soccer team. I was making light of the situation. People....there the worst!!!
