The pathetic thing is that whatever the new name will be won't be as 'good' as 1836. If I were a season ticket holder, I would call them up and demand that if they don't keep 1836, I want a refund. I bet it end up being FC Houston.
The more I think about this the more it pisses me off. I was all set to embrace this sport and team. I was going to get my tickets and all my gear and I was going to love every minute of it. When they named it 1836 I was thrilled plus we all know how us Texans love this state so that was the cherry on top. Hell, you can't go a couple of miles on the freeway without seeing a Texas flag. If this damn team can't embrace my city and show some pride for being in this great state of Texas then f*** them! They are spitting all over this city and state by the way they are backing out of this name. They named it 1836 because of the city and they are changing it because it's the same year Texas won it's independence?
I appreciate your comments. But the fact is that native born Texans are very proud of our heritage. The fact that we got decimated by the Alamo, yet it is still our pride, proves this. I would hope that ANY Texan would respect what was accomplished that day in 1836 in San Jacinto. Just like you have pride in your background, I have pride in mine. And, FYI, the only reason Texas was annexed by the US in 1845 was because the Mexicans were trying to reclaim the land, which, also, BTW, was only a border dispute. Oh, and read the 1836 board. The name was well tested before they came out with it. If we lose the name, it only means one thing: the whiny few beat the choice of the many.
Man some of you really don't like Mexicans. It was a stupid name anyway. And half of you probably would have stopped caring after the first year.
Well they just probaly are using this name being offensive as a cover up to the real reason....the name sucks and it was a mistake in the first place I for one am happy that the name might get changed. At first I liked Torros but I am going for Lonestars. The name still keeps the Texas spirit and is not ofensive to anybody...problem solved
I liked the name and hope it stays but if it doesn't they need to pick Generals. I go to Sam Houston state and still can't figure out why they named us the bearkats. The native americans refered to sam houston as "the raven" so even ravens would be understandable. Plus, if they change it, itz gonna mess up my sig.
For the reason that most/some Mexicans still have ill feelings about how Tejas(and the entire SW) was taken from them. And now they have to have it rubbed in their faces by soccer team that they will probably support. PBS has a great documentary on the war called the U.S. Mexican War in case you really curious. The documentary is great b/c they don't sugar coat the facts.

Some of the whining about the name change by some is just as bad as the alleged whining by Hispanics. I mean, whining about having to change the name of Houston because Hispanics may be offended is just idiotic. I find it very curious that there hasn't been any sort of widespread protests against the name, yet they are suddenly changing the name. There were even Hispanic leaders on the podium when they announced the name. It's also curious that there were a lot of people who hated the name before this report came out. Methinks it is a marketing thing, honestly. I'm personally upset because I really liked the name and thought it was unique for what you typically see among American sports mascots. However, the rumored new name is Lone Star, which is pretty cool too. Let me ask ya'll this. If a Japanese baseball team named themselves the 1941, do you think anyone in America would be offended?
in all honesty, who cares. it's a name for a soccer team that most of you here won't even watch. won't follow closely. i liked the old name. but whatever. it's a soccer team name. move along. nothing to see here.

I have no idea what the hispanic perspective is of texas independence. and because most of us don't, we get post like, "even though I have no intention of ever watching this team or buying tickets I will be pissed off if they change the name."

This is a terrible example. Pearl Harbour was one small part of a war that the Japanese eventually lost. The Japanese did not gain their independence through bombing one Naval Base. Most importantly, it was recent enough that people still living today remember and were personally effected. The Texas Revolution was OVER 170 YEARS AGO!!! The people complaining about the name are simply doing it to have something to b**** about. There is absolutely no reason that they should be offended about this. After 170 years and approximately 7-8 generations, it is time to get over it. As my grandfather would say, "The more I think about it, the pisseder off I get." This is a slap in the face to proud Texans. It would be like Philadelphia changing the name of the 76'ers because English immigrants are offended by the name due to losing the American Revolution. It is absolutely and completely ridiculous and if the name does change for this reason, I will not be a fan period.
Where is the pressure coming from? Have mexicans been calling into radio shows to complain? Did LULAC say anything? Can somebody show me an offended mexican and not an article from some pontificating moron who's probably never even been to Texas?
I was actually excited about being exposed to professional soccer and had intentions of following the team and buying tickets even though I thought they were overpriced. I had even considered getting some sort of season ticket until I saw the prices.
That's not really a good example either since the majority of people in Philly aren't recent immigrants or the sons/daughters of recent immigrants from England.
Well, I saw one article in a Spanish newspaper when the name was announced, it had quotes from from people around Houston, but that's about it, I'm still thinking it had everything to do with money.
What does recent immigration have to do with it? Should recent immigrants still be pissed off about the American revolution? Should anyone at all still be pissed off about the American revolution? Wouldn't you agree that English/European immigrants populated the majority of Philadelphia? Wouldn't you also agree that there are ancestors of English/European immigrants that opposed the American revolution that could for some unknown, ridiculous reason say that it is offensive?
