Well, I'm not offended by this at all, but I understand why some Mexicans are, however I do understand why you ask those questions, I mean what's so offensive about cartoons?
I guess those behind this allegeded backlash will be wanting to tear down the Alamo next. If this turns out to be true, no backbone on the franchises part. I thought Houston 1836 was a good name for a soccer (futbol) team.
I'm trying to figure out who they are, the only people I've talked to that didn't like the name had nothing to do with Texas history.
It seems that somebody got an email from Oliver Luck confirming it. This team won't have any support from me if they are going to show a lack of backbone like that.
You mean that isn't a military resort in the Carribbean? Man and I thought they were getting a free vacation at our military's version of Club Med.
Hey, to the victor goes the spoils. What kind of world do we live in where you worry about offending the losers of a war with a silly year?
A PC world were everybody b****es and moans about everything. I guess they'll stop celebrating September 16th in Mexico since it could offend Spaniards.
Do British people living in Philly find the 76'ers to be an offensive name? I don't get it. How could the date of Texas independence be so offensive to people who were either born here or willingly moved here from Mexico? Can't they just recognize that the war was a necessary step to create the state which they now call home? I don't see anything negative in the name 1836.
I have to agree with you on this one. It's just kind of childish and going a bit extreme to say it's really pissing them off to have this name. Unless they came at them saying the hispanic community will not buy tickets and this and that and they thought it would be a PR problem with the team being new to Houston. Makes me wonder what type of input was put in when they were deciding the team name and if they took this into consideration. I would have never thought about it. At one point in time most countries have won their independence, haven't seen it offend anyone from that point on... I highly doubt most hispanics are sitting there loathing against the US and thinking back in the 1800 and calling us bastards or anything...just kind of childesh and stupid.... I would like to hear more input from the hispanic community we have on the board.
The team consulted the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and some of the local hispanic city officials and none of them saw a problem with it. Andrea Garcia was at the name unveiling ceremony and spoke about it even.
That's what I don't get. I personally thought this was the case. The hispanic community was one of the biggest supporters of MLS coming to Houston and i was sure they had some people on the board or there at all the official meetings. Then this comes about, so im kind of shocked and wondering who exactly it was that could pressure the team to change everything right after we just got it, the teams colors, and t-shirts all over the place.
I can understand if Mexicans get offended. I know it's just a movie, but for some perspective, if you can find it, watch "Come and Take It Day" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0284007/ (starring the same dude that played the big brother artist/drug addict in Blood In Blood Out.) A lot of the resentment still felt today by Mexicans/Mexican-Americans is portrayed. Whether or not the feelings of Mexican-Americans should have any bearing at all on an MLS team name in the deep south bible belt, who knows.
I'm not offended by Houston 1836 at all. I haven't even heard much at all about this in the latino community. I think anyone that is offended by that is just stupid.
Ha, wow that's pathetic. This reminds of when Birmingham had to choose a team name for their XFL team. They settled on Thunderbolts (but Bolts was used primarily) and had a pretty sweet logo: Initially, the name Blast was chosen, however it was chosen because there was fear it might invoke images and connections to the 1963 church and 1998 abortion clinic bombings. That makes a little more sense than the current situation with 1836. This is blatant stupidity.
