Not sure about zero, but this will seriously affect my feelings (& obviously others' as well) about the team. Dr. Ludicrous - I hope you're right, and that this is related to a nickname & not a renaming of the team. Nobody would ever go poor betting on the incompetence of the local media. Have you tried contacting the 1836 front office for clarification?
Someone from 1836 was on 610 a little bit ago. I didn't catch the whole thing but I think he did say they are considering changing the name because of the backlash they have received. He talked about the other names that were in the poll that had a lot of votes, The Generals and Toros. I don't see how they can use the Generals because I'm sure the same group that is mad about 1836 will be mad about it too.
I just sent one to my season ticket rep, others have sent them also and to the Chron's soccer reporters. I'll post any updates.
I can honestly say that I am pretty pissed off about this whole thing. If they think there was a backlash from a small minorty who didn't like the name, wait to see what happens when they change it to something like Toros or Tejanos.
You know, if it was the Houston Santa Anna Killers, the Houston Border Destroyers, or maybe the Houston Huevos Stompers I could see the problem. 1836 is apart of Texas and Houston histroy. Its not a dig at Mexico or its residents. It isn't like it happened last year, 10, 20, 50, 100, or even 150 years ago either!! I wonder if England gets pissed when they hear about the Patriots winning the Super Bowl.
well, I called it when it first came out. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=2163989&postcount=15
No to mention the MLS team New England Revolution. Or the fact the Sam Houston led the army against the Mexicans. Do we have to change the city name next? This is such a terrible idea if it's true.
LOL - and sadly this is the most publicity MLS will ever get in Houston. Well not that sad, MLS sucks. Club football is great in Europe. Int'l football is great. MLS is like watching Single A minor league baseball - a pleasant diversion, but a second rate product. They should put the MLS and WNBA out of their collective financially troubled miseries. Nobody cares. That's why the team moved out of 1-horse San Jose anyway. Now flame away.
Just curious, but how many MLS matches have you watched in the last 2 years. I used to agree that MLS sucked, but the product has improved immensely in the last few years. Also, MLS is doing quite well financially right now, so the comparison to the WNBA is ignorant.
In the last two years - i tried to watch a couple of MLS matches but ended up changing the channel (edit- now that I recall, I think I watched becasue of Freddy Adu - so must have been a DC United game). i watched one series some MLS team played agaisnt the jamaican club champs on fox soccer channel - a bit of a snooze. Financially - are they breaking even? I thought they were only around because of hefty support from USA Soccer.
Just got a reply from my ticket rep. Not sure if it just mean there is but they aren't saying anything about it yet or not.
You say the exact same thing that as the WNBA apologists. "The product isn't great but its getting better!!" "Ticket sales are on the rise!!" "Blah Blah Blah!!" How can you not compare it to the WNBA? Its a crap league that very few people give a **** about and the only reason they are around is because of the support of a greater entity (NBA/USA Soccer). Would I have been interested at first? Of course, just like I was interested in the Comets the first couple of seasons. The only reason anyone cared past the first season is because they won. Even then, it was horrible to watch and now that the "new" has worn off (way way off), if the Comets flew into a black hole, I wouldn't lose one second of sleep. I'd probably ask why it didn't happen sooner. The same thing will happen with the 1836 or Toros or Tejanos or whatever ridiculous name they get now. With the prices they are trying to push, I can't imagine it being successful.
Complete BS, what the f*** is offensive about honoring the founding of the city in which the team is playing? I have a hard time believing that people with a Mexican heritage are really that wrapped up and obsessed with losing Texas nearly two centuries ago. It's not like this is the equivelant of the "Red Skins", it's not like it's a racial slur, it's merely a date. Anyways, I have a feeling that they're merely having second-thoughts about the name to begin with, and if they choose anything other than the Generals, I will be very disappointed. Can someone explain why "1836" is offensive to the sensibilities of people of Mexican heritage? I am honestly interested in trying to understand where they are coming from...I don't see it.
