You said they were either American or illegal, which is incorrect. Legal residents, are not Americans, yet they live in America legally. I know the point you're trying to make, I was just pointing out that there's a middle ground between being an American and being illegal.
Where is this "pressure"? I haven't exactly been looking, but have there been any published op-eds about it (I recall there was one in one of the spanish-language papers)? Any press releases from LULAC, etc...? I'd be interested in seeing anything that's out there. I'd really, really like to know how Texas' winning its independence from Mexico 170 years ago is somehow "offensive" to anybody (not to mention that that's not even what the team name references!). I don't see too many Spaniards getting upset over el Dieciséis de septiembre. Should we ban Cinco de mayo out of deference to European sensibilities? Seriously, it's history, it happened, grow up, move on & get the **** over it. The only people I see being divisive or offensive are those who want us to downplay our state's proud history. This is beyond bullsh!t and a total embarrassment. Let the jokes commence.
Maybe, but that is hard to argue when your fan base will probably be majority Mexican. Therefore, their dollar (not pesos) speak volumes.
I totally agree and honestly if they change the name because of this, my interest level will go to zero. As far as ticket sales go, if they are having problems, its because they are too freaking expensive.
Most Mexicans don't support MLS, they support the Mexican league and look down upon MLS. They would rather watch a Mexican team on TV than to go watch a live game int he city they live in. To pander to them is idiotic.
There have been a couple in English news sources (one in the Chron and one on Foxsports.com). I can look for the links if you want. Overall I think it's much ado about nothing and don't know how much faith I put into this source. It could just be them coming up with a nickname for the team which they said they would do when they announced the name and logo. I agree completly.
Latin != Mexican. It's hard to beleive but if you go south of Mexico there's a few other countries and a whole other continent made of latin people. It's well documented that most Mexican don't support MLS.
knock them back with facts... such as "surveys state that over (insert percentage here) (ethnic group here) support MLS whereas (insert percentage here) do not" you can even make them up if ya want, but the point is , you've gotta fight fire with fire. if they question you, ALWAYS make up something. thus saith Tmac640.
Surveys say that less than 1% of fans in attendance at MLS games are of Mexican decent. Thanks TMac640
TOTAL CRAP! I just got my t-shirt the other day. I guess it'll be worth something some day. I actually liked the name. It was a typical Americanized team name. It was something that actually connected them to the city, whether anyone knew it or not. To claim it as some sort of racism or that if offends Mexicans in any way is total stupidity. Who wants to bet that the new name will be the Houston Tejanos or something that is hispanic in nature. What a joke.
After only a month and a half of existance they were already close to the MLS average for season tickets, I don't think that was it. If it was anything it was sponsoship issues.
Will the Mexican-Americans on the bbs please comment on this? Was it offensive to you in any way? Curious.
