So you think they are just making the choice to be lazy and let their own citizens and leaders die? And if only they realized they needed to take control of their country, they would?

its about damn time our elected leaders start carrying out the wishes of the people who elected them.

once again, we have the real traitors and moonbats like basso and tradertexx, who, despite the fact that a vast majority of the troops WHO ARE SERVING IN IRAQ want out and a vast majority of the american public wants us out and a vast majority of the iraqi people want us out, continue their partisan support of their god bush and his illegal and immoral war of choice.

this poll is from a year ago, but i highly doubt that their attitudes are going to swing basso and tj's way since then. how can you two claim to "support the troops" when everything you are clamoring for goes against their wishes?

An overwhelming majority of 72% of American troops serving in Iraq think the U.S. should exit the country within the next year, and more than one in four say the troops should leave immediately, a new Le Moyne College/Zogby International survey shows.

I think there is nothing wrong with putting their feet to the fire, and making them realize that the US will not be there forever.

The US should announce a pull out date, and help the Iraqis be prepared for that date.

    Time to come home.

Why do this now, when the surge is actually having success?

Because as elected officials, they are doing what they were elected to do.

Bring our troops home and end this illegal and uneccearry war.

What would happen to the dems if the surge and any future strategies turned the tide of the war? Their whole identity for the past few years has been that they are against everything Bush in general and the war in particular. If the war ends up going well, they are screwed, they cannot afford for America to win in Iraq.

There has actually been some moderate success after the surge, but it far different than the surge working. It is like things have moved from 98% miserable to 94% miserable.

It hasn't shown that it will work or achieve the stated goals.

I don't see what the big deal is. GW Bush has stated that he wants the Iraqi govt. to do certain things before we pull our troops out. This bill, in large part, makes it official that if our troops will stay there the Iraqis have to live up to those bench marks.

I wouldn't count on that. The surge isn't a new idea as previous attempts have been made to temporarily increase numbers, secure Baghdad ands other regions. While they have shown shortterm success the problem is sustaining that progress. At the moment the surge is showing success due in a large part to the Mahdi Militia calling a cease fire. My understanding though is that this is political and they haven't been disarmed yet.

I've never thought the surge was a bad idea in principle but IMO its way too late and it will be very difficult to sustain over long period.

To address your point more directly though success, in terms of stability, in Iraq will be a good thing but if anything that will speed up the call to withdraw. At that point you are just as likely to see go to hell as soon as the US leaves.

No Constitutional problem with Congress directing the funds. The Repubs did it to Clinton re: Somalia and the Dems did it to Nixon re: Vietnam.

Because God only knows that a Democratic president has NEVER signed a pork-lden, budget busting bill.

Both parties are guilty of doling out the pork...and we ALL pay for it. It's sick.

I gotta agree with old rimrocker here. This is exactly the reason that the Constitution gives Congress the power to control the purse.

I totally agree here. Robert Byrd is among the biggest pork barrel politicians there is, and Presidents of both parties have signed off on that kind of spending.

Democrats are the pork party. In fact, most of the pork in the appropriations bill was added by Democrats. Republicans normally at least give lip service to cutting pork. But what W has done with pork is unprecedented. We conservatives who voted for him in 2000 were bamboozled.
