the layout's not that bad, its the content found within the layout. If i thought Napster or Motorolla or the fact that it is 2:35 pm was a headline, all would be dandy. Plus no RSS feed? come on . . . you can't completely change your website and not have an RSS feed. This isn't 1996.

That is the biggest problem with the site. They have very little news on the "Front Page"

True but if you want a rehash of the news input on the previous site design...just go here:

Yeah I know. My question is, why isn't that the "Front Page"?

I actually like the new Chronicle site, except for one thing: the bigass ad to the left of the "Shortcuts" section. It would look better with an expanded shortcuts section and a banner ad at the top.

It's better than the Dallas MN's site, though - their bar on the left side of the screen is way too busy. The NY Times has far and away the best newspaper website.

Yeah, I gotcha. I guess it's not as visually appealing as a Front Page and they figure if people want they extra news in one view, they'll go with the extra click.

cool thanks for the search, but you shouldn't have to search for an RSS feed . . . . It should (if they are going to the trouble of redesigning the site) be up front and available on the start page. Don't mean to be too harsh, I'm just pissed off. The Chronicle has been on a downward spiral for the past few years. I should have expected this move coming, as the print paper changed it format to an ads rag last year. I don't get it, how can so many millions of people be satisfied with the newspaper in Houston. Too many stories are just pulled from the AP or other papers. I don't even get what the STAR section is supposed to be . . . Entertainment? I don't think so. I guess that I am just frustrated that our paper sucks and no one seems to give a crap.

    That's all.

Here's a representation I found on the internet that would seem to incorporate a lot of the ideas expressed in this thread. I think this would be a much better design for the site.

Once again, I did not make this design up. I simply found a link to it on bloghouston.net.

oh, sorry. One more really big issue . . . venting . . . as most who have posted here and on the Chron site seem to not get, I don't get either.

Why the $&#^ is there a freaking news link. Correct me if i am wrong, but isn't this a NEWSpaper?

I dont like it. The new page seems to have quite a few bugs but the general layout is not appealing. If it aint broke , no need to fix it

Anyone else find the page loads incredibly slow? Cable at home and T3 lines at work and it still just crawls.

Just my .02 as someone in the web development industry...

I hate the colors, but the layout is not bad. I liked having more headlines on the front than they do now and the ads are a bit annoying, but having the time and the basic weather stuff right there is nice. Direct links inside each section helps.

Overall, I like it better than the last one, but the thing sure does load freakin' slow for me.

Has anyone seen the front page today? You gotta laugh for at least a second or two. :D

EDIT: K, 20 mins after I post this, they change the front page. Oh well.

So how come I couldn't find the outcome of the Hopkins/Tarver fight on the Chronicle's website this morning?

I'm sorry...but the new design apparently means less information as well. It sucks. There is one headline story: UT's win...There are duplicate stories on their AP ticker...Next to that are the More Sports headlines. That fight result isn't in there anywhere.

The information is less accessible than it used to be. And in some cases, like this one, it's not even there, anymore.

I was able to find it by going to the Boxing section, Sports--->Other Sports. You're right though, it should be a headline.

Do you get an RSS feed from the Chron? Was the fight on that? Maybe they're moving to that sort of distribution plan - those who really want the news just get the feed...?

Chron.com looks like a white flag - the HC has no plans of being a legit news generator / distributor... just a voice for the area.
