it doesn't surprise me he got fired, given the exposure of this and the nature of his job. but the comments from his boss that it was "unforgiveable?" give me a break.
I think it is a question of deleting that one consonant as opposed to adding it. If you say "shoo" instead of "shoot," one can dismiss that by saying that you are just lazy. People do that all of the time (delete consonants). Adding a consonant, on the other hand, takes a concerted effort (whether deliberate or not). You specifically have to add the "t" in "shoot" or the "n" in coon. I hope that makes sense Also, for the record, I feel for the man because he made a mistake. It should be obvious to anyone that the mistake was not malicious (he obviously did not intend to say what came out), simply because the word "coon" contextually makes absolutely no sense, whereas "coup" makes perfect sense. When that ESPN anchor dropped the F-bomb, dropping the F-bomb where she did made perfect sense. In this man's case, it makes about as much sense as saying "potato" or "mansion." Moreover, I do not think he would make a racial slur right after praising the woman. Tough luck I guess
I don't think SHOO and SHOOT are that close I don't think I ever had an mispeak when i added a consonant at the end Whether he is a racist or not is irrelevent He said the wrong thing and got punished for it end of story Rocket River Proving Racism in 2006 is impossible. . so i don't even try
perhaps this is one of those BLACK OR WHITE moments Where some folx play BRUNO and others play BRIAN and the situation is somewhere in between It depends on everyone's personal DEFAULT setting In places of racism . . .someone folx Default to see others Default to see it as a Isolated Incident perhaps the show is still a bit relevant Rocket River
perhaps but you have to think of it like this If I tap you lightly on the hand . . .it does not hurt if i keep it up for the next two weeks constantly.. it will hurt. . and if i leave and 10 minutes later someone taps you on the hand it will still hurt .. . . even if that person knows nothing of the previous to weeks some pains are like that the body and the mind build up a hypersensativity to certain things . .. racial slurs is one of them Rocket River
i'm sorry that this exists..that validates these feelings you have. but i'm also hopeful that you can find enough grace to forgive people for mistakes.
I heard it this morning and it didn't sound like an accident - though it's hard to tell when people are sincere if using their "radio voices".
do you guys really think he meant to say "coup". that makes no sense. rice is the sec. of state of the u.s, you can't call her coon on a radio interview and expect to keep your job.
It makes sense if you think a black woman becoming secretary of state is a big feat. I guess I would have to hear it to know if it was an intentional slip or not. From the transcprit it doesn't seem that way.
The way he said it on the air it really sounded like he was being a smart-ass and "accidentally on purpose" doing it - but like I said, it's hard to tell if people are sincere or not with the radio voice.
