A friend just talked me into going up to my local race track and betting on a horse today.

Horse is named Hoppsey. I'm actually going a Win/Place/Show bet on him, and then Im doing an "Exacto" (whatever that is) bet on him and horse #6 from the same race.

He's convinced me it's a sure thing but I hate doing something I don't totally understand lol.

    Anyone had success with this?

My horses race is today at 3:40pm EST, Belmont park, race #6.

There is no such thing as a sure thing in horse racing.

An exacta is where you pick the first and second place finishers in a race. People tend to 'box' three horses in an exacta. Assume you box horses 1, 2 and 3. If the race finishes:

    1, 2
    1, 3
    2, 1
    2, 3
    3, 1
    3, 2

you will win the exacta. The odds depend on the horses odds to win. So if 1 and 3 were both longshots and they finish 1,3 or 3,1 you will win a lot of money. If they were listed as 3:2 and 2:1 odds, you will win, but not much

Since you are betting 6 possible combinations, a $2.00 bet will cost you $12.00.

bobek, $12 is the most I wanted to spend really,

so would I do a $2 bet for both my bets? or just the exacto box?

I would've quinella'd your horse and #6. That way, you'd win as long as both horses come in first and second, in either order.

Morning lines had Hoppsey at 6/1 and Unbridled Heat (#6) at 7/2. The exacta probably won't pay too great...and the quinella will probably pay way worse. With only a seven horse field, most bets probably won't pay large.

    Good luck!

This guy told you he had a sure thing in a horserace and you're giving him your money?

The only sure thing I see is that you're the sucker.

If it's a sure thing I say bet the farm, or spaceship in this case, on it. What's the worse that could happen?

I suspect you can do a $2 exacta bet but you only have one combination - e.g. Horse 1 to win and Horse 2 to place. If they don't come in that order, you lose.

If your friend has advised you on a sure thing, then either that horse has low odds (e.g. 3:2) or he knows something is amiss. If you lay down a $2 bet on a heavy favorite to win, you won't net much money.

My strategy which has always left me leaving the track with more money than I started (granted, this has only been about 5 times in my life and I know nothing about horses, so this is more luck than skill), was to do a lot of boxing with a horse with low odds, a horse with medium odds and a horse with medium to high odds. If you win one or two of those, then you are set for the night.

Doesn't look like you won the "sure thing" if you used #6 as part of the exacta, he finished 3rd.

    Hoppsey finished last.....hahahahaha

Maybe I'm not reading the box correctly, but does that mean that Hoppsey came in dead last?
