a. i bow to the master of clutch, big shot bob. b. damn, maybe he should be in the hall of fame. just because he is that damn clutch. no other reason necessary. just put that on his plaque, "because he was just that damn clutch." c. WHY IN GOD'S NAME DID DETROIT LEAVE HIM OPEN??!! i'm open to any and all suggestions. how could there not have been specific instructions not to give up a 3 when they were up 2? and how could "do not leave robert horry" not have been said a minimum of 100 times in the huddle. how? why would rasheed, guarding the clutchest guy ever, immediately (immediately!!) leave him to go double team a guy in the corner who has no shot at a 3 and would have a tough drive even if he did drive, and could only tie it if he drives? why? in my mind i imagined the worst scenario possible and it was a drive and kick to horry who somebody left. when i saw him inbounding, i immediately got flashes to dennis scott inbounding in game 1 against us and getting the pass back for the game tying 3 in OT. i couldn't even believe that was the spurs plan. too easy to defend. it was almost as if the pistons wanted to see what would happen. the only thing i can think of is this is all scripted and they wanted to set up big shot bob for one more playoff glory moment. okay, get 'em down by 2 and then give horry the 3 and see what happens. and they did. only explanation that makes sense at this point.
Okay, I think it's time for a Robert Horry highlight compilation video. Or is there one out there already?
does anyone know bill simmons' (the sports guy) email address? for some reason, i can't find it. thanks.
i really want detroit to win because i do not want to have less titles than sa. we are tied right now, and i want HOUSTON to be breaking that tie..but when horry started his magic, i couldnt help but smile and be in COMPLETE AWE of what he did. i wasnt surprised at all, didnt doubt it for a second.... i am just still totally AMAZED how he can just turn it on like that. most clutch players ever: 1. michael jordan 2. reggie miller 3. robert horry
The legend continues...Big Shot Bob is my hero. Can we please get him to finish his career here winning a couple more rings with Yao and Tmac?
i'm going for detroit but i too found myself cheering for horry after that dunk. leaving him open for the three after he inbounded the ball was the dumbest defense lapse i've seen in a long time. as for the hall of fame, sentimentally maybe yes, but realistically, hell no. he's freaking terrible during the regular season and that counts.
As soon as he headed for the rim, I could see visions of his days with us! I still remember how he would bob his head after dunking on someone - which usually caused a 'T'. that dunk definitely brought back some great Horry/Cassell memories
I also do not understand this, but for some reason other team ALWAYS leave him open, i really do not understand it. It is not like he never makes a clutch shot. When he played for us and for the lakers and now for the spurs everytime in the clutch his defender leaves him open, i cannot understand it
I think if you watched the last play, he was open for a split second but Prince was there as he shot it, there was a hand in his face when he shot the ball. It's with 8 seconds left, there's not a lot of time, you trap the guy that gets the ball and rotate. Usually the pressure, panic, limited time and defensive rotation will mean that some one is taking a shot that they are not normally shooting, or they think too much or try too hard, or just flat out panic. Robert is special cuz he doesn't care (his biggest vice in the regular season), he'll run the last play like any other play, get to the spot he needs to get to. Wont try to do too much, don't care about the clock, he gets an open shot and nails it.
For every championship ring Horry has on his fingers he has made major contributions where it counts the most....the playoffs. Besides he's got more bling than any active player and is in a position to get even more. I think he gets in.
That's what I've always wondered too. Why would people leave him open for the game winning shot time after time? I think most role players get open in those situations. Only Horry is not afraid to take the shot and nails them. Defenses usually focus on the star players for the most important possessions. But if I were the coach of the opposing team, I would make sure to tell whoever guarded Horry NEVER to leave him open for the game winning shot.
