Former model wants to be whipped in public Other News & Views KARTIKA Sari Dewi Shukarnor, the former model ordered to be whipped six times for consuming alcohol, has expressed her wish for the punishment to be carried out in public if possible, Harian Metro reported. She was quoted as saying that she wanted the punishment to be carried out in public to serve as a lesson to others who consume alcohol. Met at her home in Kampung Jawang Salak, Sungai Siput, recently, the 32-year-old said she wanted her family to be allowed to watch it, adding: “I hope the media will be allowed to cover it as well. I’ve brought shame to my family despite having received religious teachings from my parents since young. I hope the punishment will bring me back to the right path.” She said she did not regret her decision not to appeal despite her husband’s persuasion, preferring to treat the entire episode as a challenge from God. She was also quoted as saying she was mentally and physically prepared for the punishment. However, her husband Muhammad Afandin Amir, 38, is worried for his wife’s health as the punishment would possibly be carried out during the month of Ramadan. “However, I respect the court’s decision,” he said. http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2009/8/21/nation/20090821072407&sec=nation
I would be worried about her mental health. Its one thing to accept your punishment but to want it done publically strikes me as being very odd bordering on some sort of exhibitionist fetish.
i guess while the story is already making headlines around the world a public beating would result in more outrage/outcry from the world public in general. people always get mad over what they can see and hear. If I am going to get lashed anyway I would rather have it done in public where maybe I could become a martyr of sorts. (granted that I was getting whipped for something like this not for an actual serious crime) out of sight out of mind otherwise when it comes to the majority of people
^ Except she is not saying she wants to be caned publically as a martyr but as an example of what befalls those who drink. That strikes me as odd considering that under her cultural norms she is not supposed to draw attention to herself but in this case she wants more attention to be drawn to her to show the evils of drink. She is voluntarily adding to her shame, as defined by her culture, by wanting to make a public spectacle of her being caned on the bottom.
I read an article by a Malay reporter a few years ago, who concluded that when one can buy a 1 million dollar property in KL, he shouldn't be getting a 7% bumi discount at all. That's how things can go wrong in execution. When the benefits are not helping the bumis in need while non-bumis who need them are systematically discriminated, it creates misunderstanding and tension for decades. This is a short film by the late Yasmin Ahmad, which subtly and metaphorically tells the Malaysian story. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HPt4Is5V50 We are going through changes now. I'm disgusted by many incidents in recent years, but I'm very excited to see how the people have responded, which I never imagined could have happened here.
Different subject here, dont wanna start a new thread, but can someone dig up the thread of some guy asking for advice for a 1st date?!?! Sorry for the random post, TIA
It might help to see other cultures in their own context. It is odd, and almost disturbing that you would even imply a fetish from her statement.
Maybe because their brains have not been exposed to true freedom, and the only thing they know is what their parents, the Mullahs, and the Muslim school system tells them. It is hard to blame them for making the wrong choice, it is all they know. And you got to keep those women down you know....they are not on the same level as us men, right? DD
I've been to Malaysia several times and have lived in Muslim cultures and a desire to be publically flogged is out of the ordinary for those cultures.
oh please this has nothing to do with keeping women down. the no drinking rule applies to both muslim men n women in malaysia. and yeah, anyone who puts any worth in religion is not using their brains fully like the brainy dadakotas in the world. its the wrong choice if its not your choice. please do not make yourself out like the typical american cliche the rest of the world tries to paint all of you as. im malaysian born n educated like the rest of my countrymen n we're all different with viewpoints n choices. we're not living under rocks.we know whats out there for us to partake in, sex, booze, drugs, gambling, supporting lakers, etc. the majority voted in the system we have right now, while i dont think everything suits me to my liking, i certainly wouldnt be so presumptuous as to fault other people's brains.
Well I know it is not being caned because you drink a beer. Or, the ability to walk down the street and yell "God is not real"....and it not be a crime. DD
Its better than jail for smoking weed and a lifetime criminal record, dont you think? Its not a crime. You might get treated badly in some less open towns, but the same is true of every country. Any other examples of true freedom you want to share?
Yes, DAMN them for punishing those who disrespect the central belief system of 4 billion people in the world. What they really need is a secular government. One which doesn't differentiate between Muslims and non-Muslims at its airports for example. One where the lobbyists don't have a huge say in who gets to be President based on power and wealth. One where you can carry a gun around to a town hall meeting. One where a "Burquini" is banned because it is "backwards. One where the people themselves are sure that the President will reflect their opinion on waging war. One where the President is so purely elected (after a recount), that he believes God tells him to wage wars. Yeah that's definitely what's missing in Malaysia. This bad ruling, despite being the first of its kind, is a clear indication of how poor their entire system is. But alas, they have never tasted freedom, and surely have not studied, so how would they know. *Sigh* DaDakota, do they even have tv and internet like you do? universities that teach politics? The poor things. They have no clue what they're missing out on. (Meanwhile in Darfur, 100,000 people have died for nothing. But screw that, let's focus on the caning of one woman who drank alcohol knowing it's not allowed in her country. If CNN does it, it must be right.)
Nice attempt to redirect....if this thread was about that, then we could focus on it....which we should. The rest is typical. 4 billion people do not all believe the same thing, nor are they as fervent as you are, or some governments. And just because there is a large number of people does not make them right, lots of them used to believe the world was flat once too.....or they believed in the Roman Gods, or the Egyptian gods, or the Babylonian gods, or the Greek Gods. Why are those now wrong and others are right? Simply because one guy said God was talking to him? History is filled with people saying God spoke to them, the only difference is that those people's religions didn't take off.... Humanity has a way of seeking the popular, it is the easiest way out, and it is usually the poor and uneducated who are the first believers...... DD
